Preserving Mobile’s history in Leinkauf
When a strong community culture and downtown accessibility are top of mind, historic districts like Leinkauf become attractive corners of Midtown Mobile. “One of the best things about any of the historic districts is how friendly people are. Everyone pulls up in their driveway and sees who’s over on their porch and wants to talk,” says Tim Maness, president of the Mobile Historic Development Commission and a longtime resident of the neighborhood. After years of nurturing Leinkauf’s historic architecture at several different homes, Maness knows that one of the community’s biggest strengths is its diversity. “We have people from just about every kind of background you can think of,” he says. “We have people in their 20s buying houses, all the way up to people in their 80s and 90s.”
Established in the late 1800s, Leinkauf earned its title from Mobile County Commissioner William Henry Leinkauf, a prominent banker and community member. In 1904, the local elementary school followed suit, creating a legacy that has continued for more than a century. Now, Leinkauf offers convenience for commuters who enjoy living within a few miles of downtown Mobile and comfort for families who want a taste of suburbia while staying close to all the action.

Diverse historic architecture at a variety of price points
With build dates ranging from the late 1800s to the 1980s, Leinkauf’s housing stock is as storied as the neighborhood itself, and prices are equally as inconsistent. Historic homes lining Government Street can sell for “half a million up,” while other sections of the neighborhood are affordably priced under $200,000, Maness says. Architectural styles include spacious Colonial Revival, Queen Anne and Craftsman, in addition to compact bungalows built mostly after 1940. Sidewalk-lined streets shaded by massive live oaks give the district a welcoming feel, and most properties feature landscaped gardens — some locally supplied by the family-owned Stokley Garden Express on Government Street. Buyers should note that if they purchase a historic home, “Any kind of work that you do on the exterior of the home has to be approved through the city staff,” while interior renovations don’t require approval by the architectural review board, Maness says.

Kids can walk to Leinkauf Elementary
As part of Mobile County Public Schools, many students will attend the local Leinkauf Elementary, which holds the honorable title of Alabama’s oldest public school. Scoring a grade of C on Niche, the school sits in an impressive historic building that was originally built in 1904, although it’s been carefully reconstructed and improved twice due to fires. “Our neighborhood organization works really hard to try to help the school as much as we can” by raising money for school supplies and volunteering time, Maness says.
Students can move on to attend Calloway-Smith Middle and Murphy High, which both score grades of C-minus or better on Niche. High school football games often take place just south of the historic district at Ladd-Peebles stadium, adding to the neighborhood’s ambiance. “We can hear them on the speaker announcing who made the scoring touchdown,” Maness says. “I enjoy that because it just makes you feel like you’re part of it.” Mobile is also home to several notable private schools, including the nearby McGill-Toolen Catholic High School.

Mobile’s historic districts love street parties
Like Mobile’s other historic districts, Leinkauf organizes an energetic annual street party. “That’s one of the things that people love about living in the historic district,” Maness says of the well-attended gatherings. “Just about every house on the street opens its doors, and you actually meet a lot of people.”

Crawford Park is right down the road
Just east of South Ann Street, Crawford Park offers space for tennis matches, baseball and soccer games. Kids adore the colorful playground, while dogs and their owners enjoy meeting at the spacious dog park beside the recreation center. Paved trails loop around the fields and connect with neighborhood streets, making the park easily accessible on foot.

Dauphin Street is a dining destination in downtown Mobile
Residents of Leinkauf will find a walkable shopping center along Government Street, home to a handful of casual restaurants and a Winn-Dixie grocery store. For a more eclectic dining experience, residents can make the 2-mile trip to the riverfront in downtown Mobile. Restaurants are clustered along Dauphin Street, where open container laws mean customers can purchase alcoholic beverages from specific businesses and peruse the district with a drink in hand (until midnight, that is). Although that’s a bit far for some, Maness says he doesn’t mind walking or riding his bike when the weather is nice. Foodies can try something new at The Insider food hall, which features six international options within one room. And when it comes to major retailers, nearby Springdale and the Shoppes at Bel Air offer dozens of options just 3 miles west.

Convenient bus stops along Government Street
With ample sidewalks, Leinkauf is extremely pedestrian-friendly. “On a daily basis, you constantly have people walking around,” Maness says. Public transportation is available along Government Street, and Maness says there’s someone at each bus stop just about every morning. For longer trips, drivers can take Government Street west to Interstate 65 or east to link up with Interstate 10 in downtown Mobile.
