A "high-end neighborhood" home to Springhill Medical Center
Mature pines and tall oak trees tower over Llanfair’s ranch-style homes, which sit immediately west of the Springhill Medical Center. With four other hospitals less than 5 miles away, Llanfair “is where a lot of our doctors and nurses live,” Jennifer Ballard says. A local Realtor and associate broker at Bellator Real Estate LLC, Ballard is a longtime Mobile resident with nearly a decade of experience selling homes across the city. She describes Llanfair as “a part of what’s considered a high-end, established area.” Situated along Airport Boulevard, the neighborhood offers convenience to local restaurants, grocery stores and the city’s largest shopping mall.

Remodeled ranch-style homes on neatly groomed lawns
Homes in Llanfair were built between the 1960s and ‘90s. Most feature Prairie ranch-style architecture, with low-pitched roofs stretching across front porches decorated with hanging ferns. Ballard says the houses here are “larger and more traditional.” Many homes right across Interstate 65 measure less than 1,600 square feet, whereas in Llanfair, sizes usually range from about 2,300 to over 4,000 square feet. “There aren’t any new houses,” Ballard says, but “a lot of them have been remodeled.” Inside, modern kitchens have stainless steel appliances, and all the walls are freshly painted. Neatly groomed lawns extend far from the front flowerbeds lined with recently trimmed bushes. All the homes offer private parking, with standard driveways leading to attached garages and breezy carports. Listing prices usually range from $400,000 to $700,000 in Llanfair, but a few unrenovated homes start around $300,000.

Sidewalks link to Hackmeyer Park
Narrow concrete sidewalks link to the paved walking trail at Hackmeyer Park. Located on the east side of Llanfair, the urban green space has a large playground and a separate, fenced-in area for dogs. Its loop pathway passes four fitness stations with outdoor gym equipment and a small baseball diamond. Mobile’s oldest public golf course sits just north of the neighborhood on Spring Hill College’s campus. While the school itself is private, the 18-hole, par 72 course offers open tee times every day of the week, even during the school year. The Country Club of Mobile moved to its current location just west of Llanfair in 1914. Unlike Spring Hill, the Club requires an annual membership to use its golf course, tennis courts and swimming pools.

Restaurants and retailers on Airport Boulevard
Ballard says, “Airport Boulevard is where all your restaurants and retailers are going to be.” The Fresh Market at McGregor Square sits next to TJ Maxx, and regional fast-food chains dot the parking lot. Less than a mile down the road, Lucky Irish Pub & Grill is a small, hole-in-the-wall bar usually packed with Alabama football fans in the fall. Local nurses shop at Cherokee Scrubs 4 All just a few doors down. The Boiling Pot is a counter-service restaurant selling Creole-style Crawfish and shrimp po boys across the street. Half Shell Oyster House offers a more upscale dining experience. Located next to Aldi, the Southern seafood restaurant serves fried oyster platters and crab cakes, but the gumbo is its specialty. Mobile’s main retail center, The Shoppes at Bel Air, has over 120 stores and restaurants on the other side of Interstate 65.

Interstate 65 and Airport Boulevard border Llanfair
Llanfair is situated immediately west of Midtown Mobile, along two of the busiest throughways in the city. At its east end, Interstate 65 runs north-south and quickly links to Interstate 10. From here, it’s about 20 miles to the Mississippi border and fewer than 60 miles to Florida. Airport Boulevard travels east-west along the neighborhood’s south end. It connects to Mobile Regional Airport about 7 miles west and Midtown’s local shops and restaurants immediately east.
The Shoppes of Bel Air hosts many different retail stores next to Llanfair.

Flooding and heavy traffic in Llanfair
Eslava Creek runs through the south half of Llanfair, behind the apartment buildings and shopping centers on Airport Boulevard. During heavy rainfall, the small creek can cause flooding on neighborhood streets. This often makes the already heavily trafficked area even more congested. To help mitigate the traffic issue, the city is installing a gate between Cedar Bend and Claridge Roads in 2024. The idea is that this will prevent non-residents from using the neighborhood as a short cut between West Dauphin Street and Airport Boulevard, two of the busiest roads in Mobile.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
