Malibar Heights
Suburban Neighborhood in Mobile, Alabama
Mobile County 36609
Established ranch-style homes and more
Ranch-style homes are the most common on the market, but buyers can find other styles as well like Colonial Revival and the occasional Tudor Revival or Cape Cod. Streets are sometimes accompanied by sidewalks and exit onto larger thoroughfares at multiple points, preventing any bottlenecking. Lots tend to be shaded by mature trees and range in size from 7,000 square feet to a third of an acre. The most established homes were built during the 1940s, though most others sprang up between the late ‘60s and early 90s. Three-bedroom homes tend to start around $150,000 or lower and get up to around $350,000, though large, five-bedroom homes can surpass $400,000.Malibar Heights’ parks
Medal of Honor Park is a cherished, 80-acre green space just next door to Malibar Heights that’s especially appealing to children. “They have a really cool playground,” Ballard says, the playground recently having been updated to feature rubber surfacing and transportation-themed play structures like a car and a train. “They also have a walking track, soccer fields, softball and baseball diamonds, a disc golf course and a dog park.” For a bit more seclusion, residents can walk to Malibar Heights Park near the heart of the neighborhood, a tree-shaded green oasis ideal for events like birthday parties or playing catch with one’s dog. The beaches of Dauphin Island are about a 40-minute drive south.Schools with numerous academic opportunities
Schools in the area include Olive J. Dodge Elementary, Burns Middle and W. P. Davidson High School. Dodge Elementary and Burns Middle receive C ratings from Niche while Davidson High is B-plus rated. Davidson High students can participate in programs such as International Baccalaureate but also the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps and a college preparatory academy with pathways focusing on biomedical science, computer science and engineering. The University of South Alabama is about 10 minutes to the north by car.Fun at the library and downtown Mobile
The West Regional Library routinely hosts events like a diamond painting class for adults and a “Throwdown Thursday” for teens where they can socialize and play tabletop and video games. Plenty of other events can be found in downtown Mobile like the Mardi Gras parades and parties held each February.Driving to the hospital or flying out of town
Residents are about a 10-minute drive to Interstates 10 and 65 and can expect to reach both Mobile Regional Airport and Mobile International Airport in 20 minutes or less. For most locals, USA Health Providence Hospital can be reached by car in under 15 minutes.Shops and ice pops
“There aren’t any big shopping areas nearby, but there are a few little strip malls,” Ballard says. A Walmart Neighborhood Market and Dollar Tree can be found on the southeast corner of the neighborhood while Publix has two locations to the north and west. There’s also a Winn-Dixie on Grelot Road. Meat Boss is frequently ranked by Lagniappe Weekly readers as being the best barbecue restaurant – and having the best barbecue sauce – in all Mobile County. Customers can choose their own meat, bread, sauce and toppings to create their own delicious barbecue sandwiches. For dessert, residents can treat themselves to tasty Mexican ice pops at Jefe Paletas just next door, and they can even customize their popsicles with different ingredients including spicy chamoy.
