An urban neighborhood across from Mobile Aeroplex

Maryvale sits adjacent to the largest transportation and industrial complex on the Central Gulf Coast. Located directly across Interstate 10, the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley is a mixed-use facility comprising over 70 corporations, including Airbus North America Engineering. The combined facilities employ around 3,600 workers, many of whom live in Maryvale, Jennifer Ballard says. A local Realtor and associate broker with Bellator Real Estate LLC, Ballard says the city is currently building the new Mobile International Airport at the Aeroplex. The $380 million project will be the region’s first international passenger terminal once it’s complete in 2025. Along with the Aeroplex, Maryvale offers easy access to the Main Street-style shops and restaurants along Dauphin Street.

Craftsman cottages and Minimal Traditional ranch-style homes

Most homes in Maryvale were built during the 1980s. Minimal Traditional ranch-style houses and Craftsman cottages are the most common architectural styles. These properties surround the federal housing facilities at Thomas James Place. The boxy three-bedroom homes sit on narrow lots bordered by old concrete sidewalks, just wide enough for a stroller. Some yards are outlined with chain-link fences, while others back up to a dense wall of trees. Paved driveways with carports and faded ribbon driveways keep cars off the narrow residential roads. Though renting is common, listing prices usually range between $100,000 to $200,000 for an updated home. The fixer-uppers can range from $30,000 to $75,000.

Downtown Mobile is 5 miles away

Maryvale is only 5 miles from the Main Street-style shops and restaurants in Downtown Mobile. It’s sandwiched between Interstate 10 and Dauphin Island Parkway, about 3 miles off the bay. Commuters follow I-10 about 40 miles southwest to access the Chevron Refinery in Pascagoula. Driving east, it’s about 60 miles to Pensacola. While cars are the most common form of travel, the city’s fixed-route bus system is another convenient way to get around, with several stops along Duval Street and Dauphin Island Parkway.

Kids start at Maryvale Elementary

Maryvale students are zoned for Mobile County Schools. Niche rates Maryvale Elementary a C-minus. Sixth through twelfth-grade students can attend Lillie B Williamson High School. It also receives a C-minus and offers three career programs specializing in engineering, entrepreneurship and maritime industries. Bishop State Community College’s main campus is situated at the northwest corner of Maryvale.

P&T Seafood sells fresh Gulf shrimp

Locally owned corner stores and a few small businesses border Maryvale. Along Dauphin Island Parkway, P&T Seafood sells jumbo Gulf shrimp, steamed blue crabs and fresh seafood boils to take home. Dollar General sits across from the local convenience store just up the street. Further north, Hollywood Wing Station is a hole-in-the-wall spot serving buffalo wings and fried fish sandwiches every day except Sundays. B&H Food Store has been a staple for the community since 1947. Less than a half-mile outside Maryvale, the locally-owned grocery store sells homegrown produce, fresh-cut meats and pantry staples.

New improvements at Baumhaer-Randle Park

In June 2024, a baseball-themed splash pad opened on the north end of Maryvale at Baumhaer-Randle Park. Once an empty wading pool, the new spray park has a giant baseball bat water feature and a mitt-shaped archway. Its rubber surfacing looks like a baseball diamond. Two fenced-in ballparks sit behind the splash pad, and a playground is next door. Community organizations and the local news station worked together to build a new playground and basketball court at Walsh Park. Opening in 2021, the remodeled playscape features a wheelchair-accessible swing, monkey bars and a miniature storybook-like playhouse – all based on the crayon drawings of neighborhood kids.

Higher flood risk in Maryvale

Mobile is located just off the Gulf of Mexico and has one of the highest amounts of rainfall in the U.S. This puts it at high flood risk, specifically during hurricane season, which runs from June through November. Maryvale's location just off Mobile Bay puts it at an even higher flood risk.

Crime

Maryvale has a CAP Index crime score of 5 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4, and driven by above average scores for violent crimes.
