Private docks and budget-friendly cottages
Residential streets run through McVoy's thick forested landscape, creating a semi-rural feel. Riverside Drive meanders through its center, leading to waterfront properties. Neat brick ranch styles and shingle cottages sit back from paved roads on ample lots with long driveways. There are also larger homes with a Dog River backyard and private piers. Tall oak and evergreen trees provide shade in the Alabama heat. Cottages often range between $50,000 and $90,000, while ranch-style homes range between $95,000 and $120,000. Homes along Dog River don't often hit the market. A river-front fixer-upper sold in 2023 for $290,000.

Shops and eateries along the DIP
It's easy to hop on Dauphin Island Parkway, known by locals as "DIP or "the Parkway," to dine out. Bama Bob's, featuring an umbrella-decked outdoor patio, is the spot for award-winning barbecue by the pound and a full menu of sandwiches and combo platters. North on the Parkway, residents grocery shop at Piggly Wiggly DIP. For fresh-caught fish, crab legs, jumbo shrimp and all the fixings, locals head a bit further north to hand-pick selections from the bright and well-stocked Mudbugs DIP Seafood. "Many locals will get in their boats and travel down Dog River to have lunch or dinner at the River Shack," Greene says. "It's also an easy 25-minute drive down the Parkway to Dauphin Island, where you'll find lots of great restaurants, or you can visit the Sea Lab or just walk along the beach and enjoy the sunset."
