McVoy
Suburban Neighborhood in Mobile, Alabama
Mobile County 36605
Private docks and budget-friendly cottages
Residential streets run through McVoy's thick forested landscape, creating a semi-rural feel. Riverside Drive meanders through its center, leading to waterfront properties. Neat brick ranch styles and shingle cottages sit back from paved roads on ample lots with long driveways. There are also larger homes with a Dog River backyard and private piers. Tall oak and evergreen trees provide shade in the Alabama heat. Cottages often range between $50,000 and $90,000, while ranch-style homes range between $95,000 and $120,000. Homes along Dog River don't often hit the market. A river-front fixer-upper sold in 2023 for $290,000.Waterside recreation and community parks
Getting out on the water is undoubtedly the most popular outdoor activity in McVoy. Residents can head to nearby marinas to launch their boats. Southern Marina and Harbor, Dockside Marina and Dog River Marina are popular places to get out on the river or Mobile Bay. McNally Park is a popular place to launch canoes and paddle boards onto the water. The park also has a playground and scenic picnic areas. Farther inland, Newhouse Park and Recreation Center has a playground, walking trail, basketball court and a thriving teen center.Aviation and aerospace academy at B.C. Rain High School
Public schools are within the Mobile County Schools System, which Niche gives a B-minus grade. Students may start at Dr. Robert W. Gilliard Elementary, which earns a Niche C grade, and move on to Palmer Pillans Middle, which Niche gives a C-minus. Older students may head to Ben C. Rain High, which also earns a Niche C-minus and features signature academies with career-focused hands-on opportunities. B.C. Rain High's academies include aviation and aerospace and business information.Easy downtown access
McVoy residents only have a 10-mile drive into Downtown Mobile. Public transit is an option at Wave Transit System bus stops along the DIP. The closest hospital is Mobile Infirmary, 8 miles away. Living on Dog River, residents can expect to need additional flood insurance. But its location also has some unique perks. "You can plan to head on vacation right from Mobile Bay because we just got a new Carnival Cruise ship that lands in our port. We're also transforming our airport. It used to be regional, and now it's going to be international," Greene says. The Mobile International Airport is 5 miles from McVoy.Shops and eateries along the DIP
It's easy to hop on Dauphin Island Parkway, known by locals as "DIP or "the Parkway," to dine out. Bama Bob's, featuring an umbrella-decked outdoor patio, is the spot for award-winning barbecue by the pound and a full menu of sandwiches and combo platters. North on the Parkway, residents grocery shop at Piggly Wiggly DIP. For fresh-caught fish, crab legs, jumbo shrimp and all the fixings, locals head a bit further north to hand-pick selections from the bright and well-stocked Mudbugs DIP Seafood. "Many locals will get in their boats and travel down Dog River to have lunch or dinner at the River Shack," Greene says. "It's also an easy 25-minute drive down the Parkway to Dauphin Island, where you'll find lots of great restaurants, or you can visit the Sea Lab or just walk along the beach and enjoy the sunset."
