Suburban living in western Mobile

Melrose’s ranch-style homes sit just west of the Mobile Regional Airport, about 15 miles from downtown. Jennifer Ballard, a local Realtor at Bellator Real Estate & Development, “that western part of Mobile is considered more family-friendly and safer.” Highly rated schools are nearby, and West Mobile County Park is fewer than 5 miles away. While many of the homes are older, new residential developments have been popping up in the center of Melrose since the late 2010s. Ballard says this growth is projected to continue. “Developers recently bought up a lot of the empty land out there to expand the subdivision.”

New Traditional ranch-style homes in Maxwell Place

Melrose’s oldest homes date back to the 1980s and ‘90s. These ranch-style houses are situated along wide residential streets on the neighborhood’s southwest side. Many of the roads end in cul-de-sacs with large storm drains. This helps prevent minor flooding during the rainy season, which usually runs from June through September. On average, these older homes range from $150,000 to $250,000. Melrose’s newest properties are neatly arranged around a central roundabout in the Maxwell Place subdivision. Built in the late 2010s, these New Traditional ranch-style houses have front-facing two-car garages and sunny back patios. Prices here usually range from $300,000 to $400,000.

Melrose sits just outside the city limits, immediately west of the Mobile Regional Airport. While the U.S. Coast Guard and Airbus Space and Defense still train at the facilities, Ballard says commercial flights will move downtown in 2025. “They’re relocating to Brookley Field and building one of the longest runways in the area; it’s going to be our first international airport.”
