Mobile County 36619
Investment houses and friendly prices
Built in the 1980s, many houses in the neighborhood need some repairs. "It's a prime location for growth and investment," says Hernandez. "Investors are buying the homes to revamp and upgrade to sell or rent out." About half of the residents in Nevius are renters, living in simple brick ranches on the quiet streets. Private driveways, occasionally leading to covered carports, are common, and most homes sit on half an acre, shaded by towering oak trees. Ranging between $75,000 and $225,000 with a median of $165,000, the neighborhood's houses are about $60,000 less expensive than the Mobile average.ParksSurrounded by dense forests with walking trails and creeks
Halls Mill Creek flows in the northern end of Nevius, leading east and opening to the Gulf of Mexico. The land along the creek is untouched, making for a lush green backdrop to life in the neighborhood. "There are a lot of little parks, hiking trails and bike paths all around the wooded areas for residents to get active," Hernandez says. The Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery makes up a good chunk of the neighborhood and is filled with beautiful landscaping, fountains and sculptures. Paved walking trails in the shape of a flower encompass the plots of the graveyard and are popular with joggers and dog walkers as often as those visiting loved ones who have moved on.An early start for advanced learning
Mobile County Schools rate highly in diversity and have great options for students to get involved in clubs and athletics. Students can begin learning at Griggs Elementary School, rated a B-minus by Niche. The school started in 1958 and was named after William C. Griggs, who served the community as an educator for decades. Griggs Elementary is an AMSTI school with specialized training in the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Institute Program. Burns Middle School is next in line with a grade of C, followed by Theodore High School. The C-plus-rated school was founded over a century ago.Where the locals gather
A community gathering spot in Nevius is Dreamland Skate Center. At this colorful roller-skating rink, locals can skate around under the light of a disco ball. Residents looking for more entertainment can drive the short 10 miles to downtown, where festivals, events and a large Mardi Gras celebration occur annually. Two main interstates lead to the city
Buses stop along Government Boulevard, leading to downtown Mobile. Still, the area is heavily reliant on their cars to get around. Interstate 10 borders the shopping area, bringing some traffic and noise. Located along the Gulf of Mexico, locals can expect humid and sticky summers accompanied by high temperatures for most of the yearRunning errands a stone’s throw from home
The neighborhood's eastern end serves as the shopping area for Nevius and its surrounding suburbs. Home to a Walmart, Winn Dixie, Lowes and many fast food and chain restaurants, the area is busy with those running errands or grabbing a bite to eat. A staple eatery of the neighborhood is Dick Russel's Bar-B-Q. Serving burgers, ribs and heaping piles of fried food, it's the go-to spot for classic Southern fare. Thai Fusion provides a different cuisine, with rice dishes, curry, ramen and sushi. The highly-rated restaurant is a nice change of pace from the fast-food options surrounding it in Tilman's plazas. The area's hospital, Providence Medical Group, is in the same plazas as the large stores.
