Pine Grove
Affordable homes for the Mobile area
Most homes can be found on small streets that branch off Moffett Road. Trees are plentiful, with some residents practically having forests in their back yards. Most homes follow ranch-style and cottage designs, with brick and colorful vinyl siding. There is limited room for street parking and no sidewalks, but driveways tend to be long, homes tend to feature built-in car ports, and little traffic passes through residential streets, the most of which have no other outlet than Moffett Road. There’s also an RV park on the south side. Homes usually sell between $50,000 and $150,000, with a median price of around $100,000. This is well below the median home price of Mobile, which is around $270,000. Because of this comparative affordability, homes in Pine Grove don’t stay on the market long, often selling after just over a week on the market.Taking the highway from Pine Grove
The Wave Transit bus line run goes west up Moffett Road every hour. Most residents prefer driving, and they are right by the junction of Interstate 65 and US Highway 98/Moffett Road. Downtown Mobile is only a 15-minute drive east. USA Health University Hospital is about 7 minutes east.Schools and career preparation
Students can attend Forest Hill Elementary, C. L. Scarborough Middle and Mattie T. Blount High School, all of which receive C-minus ratings from Niche. Blount High students can participate in career academies which encourage students to pursue academic success, professionalism and personal growth while also preparing them for the workforce through hands-on experiences, job shadowing and internships. Academies include business, health science, hospitality and tourism and leadership. The University of South Alabama is about 5-10 minutes west.Shopping and eating along Moffett Road
Most of residents’ shopping can be done up and down Moffett Road, which merges into SpringHill Avenue shortly after the interstate, at businesses like Family Dollar, Piggly Wiggly and Greer’s CashSaver. Alternatively, residents can take I-65 to larger shopping malls. “Springdale is like an outdoor mall where you walk from shop to shop. There’s a pretty big variety of shops there like a Sam’s Club,” Makin says. “Bel Air Mall is an indoor mall, and they have Dillard’s, Belk and big department stores.” These malls are situated near chain restaurants like Raising Cane’s and Logan’s Roadhouse. Eateries closer to home just off Moffett include Margarita’s Mexican Restaurant, known for their earthy yet decorated interior, and Ranch Seafood, popular for their steamed shrimp and spicy crawfish.Parks and education
Residents are about 5 minutes away from Langan Park, a 720-acre municipal park, which offers a golf course, 60 tennis courts and a large playground. The park is also the location of the Mobile Museum of Art and the Mobile Botanical Gardens. Right next to Langan is the Mobile Japanese Garden. Beyond strolling around the gardens and admiring the cherry blossoms, visitors can also take Japanese art classes and learn gardening techniques at the facility’s Studies Center for Japanese Culture and Education.Events nearby and downtown
At Langan Park, the Playhouse in the Park youth theater performs a few times each summer. More events take place in downtown Mobile such as Mardi Gras, which features multiple parades and parties.
