Where convenience and affordability meet
The small neighborhood of Pine Grove shares many similarities to Autumndale to the north, such as the presence of lush, green forests and gentle, rolling hills. What makes Pine Grove unique is its main thoroughfare, Moffett Road, or US Route 98, which is much more heavily trafficked than Autumndale’s Wolf Ridge Road but will directly take residents to stores, restaurants and downtown Mobile. Other homebuyers, especially college students, might find the neighborhood’s comparatively inexpensive homes appealing. “The cost of living is more affordable out there,” says Caroline Makin, a Realtor with Exp who has been selling homes in Mobile for 6 years. “And the University of South Alabama is also not too far from there.” Ranch-style homes and cottages sell for between $50,000 and $150,000, which is well below Mobile’s median home price of about $270,000.

Affordable homes for the Mobile area
Most homes can be found on small streets that branch off Moffett Road. Trees are plentiful, with some residents practically having forests in their back yards. Most homes follow ranch-style and cottage designs, with brick and colorful vinyl siding. There is limited room for street parking and no sidewalks, but driveways tend to be long, homes tend to feature built-in car ports, and little traffic passes through residential streets, the most of which have no other outlet than Moffett Road. There’s also an RV park on the south side. Homes usually sell between $50,000 and $150,000, with a median price of around $100,000. This is well below the median home price of Mobile, which is around $270,000. Because of this comparative affordability, homes in Pine Grove don’t stay on the market long, often selling after just over a week on the market.

Shopping and eating along Moffett Road
Most of residents’ shopping can be done up and down Moffett Road, which merges into SpringHill Avenue shortly after the interstate, at businesses like Family Dollar, Piggly Wiggly and Greer’s CashSaver. Alternatively, residents can take I-65 to larger shopping malls. “Springdale is like an outdoor mall where you walk from shop to shop. There’s a pretty big variety of shops there like a Sam’s Club,” Makin says. “Bel Air Mall is an indoor mall, and they have Dillard’s, Belk and big department stores.” These malls are situated near chain restaurants like Raising Cane’s and Logan’s Roadhouse. Eateries closer to home just off Moffett include Margarita’s Mexican Restaurant, known for their earthy yet decorated interior, and Ranch Seafood, popular for their steamed shrimp and spicy crawfish.
