Sheldon
Suburban Neighborhood in Mobile, Alabama
Mobile County 36695
Newer Craftsman and 1980s ranch-style homes
Sheldon’s suburban communities have a quiet, laid-back pace of life. “Many people move here for the commute but end up settling down because it’s such an easy place to live,” says Corley. Residents enjoy wide streets and spacious, secluded cul-de-sacs lined with sidewalks and mid-size lawns shaded by young oaks. A mixture of 1980s ranch-style and 2010s Craftsman homes give a more contemporary atmosphere than older suburbs closer to downtown. Older homes are on the lower end of the price range, from a three-bedroom ranch-style for $165,000 to a similar-sized prairie-style home with a breezy front porch for $250,000. Newer homes can be found for about $400,000, such as a four-bedroom Craftsman or four-bedroom Greek Revival with a hexagonal front porch and Colonial-inspired wood siding and shutters.Playground and ballparks at Westside Park
On a sunny day, folks walk or drive to Westside Park. Kids climb on the playground with plenty of tree shade to beat the heat. In the grassy fields, pup-parents play games of fetch with their four-legged friends. Kids play rec league games at Westside Ballpark, a baseball and softball complex next to the main park.B-plus rated Davidson High School
Neighborhood kids may attend Mobile County Schools, which receive a B-minus overall from Niche. They begin at O’Rourke Elementary, graded a B, and continue at Burns Middle, rated a C. Students round out their academic journey at Davidson High, the group’s standout, given a B-plus. Davidson has many clubs where students can pursue their passions, including the field of law, as a part of the Warrior Law Club.Mardi Gras and New Years Moon Pie drop
“Mardi Gras is a huge deal here, and everyone gets in on the celebration,” says Corley, “the city basically shuts down, and kids get let out of school.” Despite being synonymous with New Orleans, American Mardi Gras celebrations originate in Mobile. The first two weeks of February are full of parties and parades leading up to the main festival. “My favorite unique event is the Moon Pie drop on New Year's Eve,” says Corley. Instead of a crystal ball, everyone gathers downtown to watch the dropping of a giant homemade Moon Pie to ring in the new year. Two miles from Mobile Regional Airport
Mobile Regional Airport sits just northwest of Sheldon, so residents have a 2-mile drive to convenient flights. For longer flights, folks drive 13 miles to Mobile International Airport.Department and retail stores within a mile
Folks do all their shopping less than a mile away at shopping centers along Schillinger Road and Airport Boulevard. They browse the aisles at Target and get essentials at Walmart. Home supplies can be found at Lowe’s and Home Depot, and folks work on their creations at Hobby Lobby. Folks also check off their grocery list with fresh produce from Rouses Market. People add to their wardrobe at Ross and gear up for the upcoming season at Academy Sports. On a Friday night, folks grab a bite from a selection of national or regional chains like Hacienda San Miguel. After dinner, people head over to view the latest blockbusters at AMC.
