Quiet suburbs next to Mobile Regional Airport and shopping centers
In Sheldon’s quiet suburban communities, it’s easy for residents to forget Mobile Regional Airport is 2 miles away, except for the occasional flyover. “People think it would seem busy with the airport and shopping centers right here, but all the tree cover gives communities nice privacy,” says Kay Corley, Realtor with Robert Brothers Realty, born and raised in the Mobile area. The communities are newer than most in the area, from 1980s ranch-style to 2010s Craftsman homes, ranging from $165,000 to $400,000. Residents go for afternoon strolls on the sidewalks, and kids play in the wide streets and manicured lawns. “Like many neighborhoods in Mobile, the location is convenient for whatever folks like to do,” says Corley. “It’s a 12-mile drive to downtown or the Alabama Shipyard during the week and an easy trip to beaches like Dauphin Island on the weekend.” Popular department and retail stores like Target, Ross and Hobby Lobby are within a mile of many homes at the Shops on Schillinger and Westwood Plaza. Folks also have a short trip to a selection of chain and local restaurants on Schillinger Road and Airport Boulevard.

Newer Craftsman and 1980s ranch-style homes
Sheldon’s suburban communities have a quiet, laid-back pace of life. “Many people move here for the commute but end up settling down because it’s such an easy place to live,” says Corley. Residents enjoy wide streets and spacious, secluded cul-de-sacs lined with sidewalks and mid-size lawns shaded by young oaks. A mixture of 1980s ranch-style and 2010s Craftsman homes give a more contemporary atmosphere than older suburbs closer to downtown. Older homes are on the lower end of the price range, from a three-bedroom ranch-style for $165,000 to a similar-sized prairie-style home with a breezy front porch for $250,000. Newer homes can be found for about $400,000, such as a four-bedroom Craftsman or four-bedroom Greek Revival with a hexagonal front porch and Colonial-inspired wood siding and shutters.
Sheldon is known for its Patio Style homes that are spread throughout the neighborhood.

Mardi Gras and New Years Moon Pie drop
“Mardi Gras is a huge deal here, and everyone gets in on the celebration,” says Corley, “the city basically shuts down, and kids get let out of school.” Despite being synonymous with New Orleans, American Mardi Gras celebrations originate in Mobile. The first two weeks of February are full of parties and parades leading up to the main festival. “My favorite unique event is the Moon Pie drop on New Year's Eve,” says Corley. Instead of a crystal ball, everyone gathers downtown to watch the dropping of a giant homemade Moon Pie to ring in the new year.
