Terrace Hills
Suburban Neighborhood in Mobile, Alabama
Mobile County 36693
Ranch-style homes and more
Contrary to its name, Terrace Hills isn’t all hilly. Streets and lots have a gentle incline in the north. But other subdivisions like Madison Place have more dynamic terrain. What all subdivisions tend to offer are manicured lawns and mature trees. Sidewalks can be found beside residential streets in the southwest side of the neighborhood. Homes on the north half of the neighborhood primarily follow ranch-style designs. In the south, homes are larger, and there’s a mix of Cape Cod, Colonial Revival and Greek Revival, alongside the usual ranch homes. Some show French country style and Victorian influence. “Many of the houses were built in the ‘50s, so it’s an established neighborhood: one of the oldest in the area,” Hinton says. Houses don’t enter the market often, he also notes. “If something does come up for sale, and it’s been updated, it starts around $150,000. Otherwise, it’s closer to $50,000,” Hinton says. Prices get up to just under $300,000, with most houses going for around the $200,000 mark.Recreation in Terrace Hills
Laun Park is near the heart of Terrace Hills, featuring an open field ideal for tossing frisbees around or playing games. Little kids will love the park’s wading pool and playground while adolescents and adults will love the recreational center, which offers games like ping pong and air hockey. Athletes can head down to Mims Park for sports like baseball, softball and soccer or up to Medal of Honor Park for more sports fields plus tennis courts and a disc golf course.Getting a head-start at college
Students can start off at Olive J. Dodge Elementary and Burns Middle, both of which receive C ratings from Niche. They can finish up at C-plus-rated Murphy High. Murphy High students can dual-enroll in classes at the University of Alabama or Bishop State Community College and participate in the University of Alabama’s Early College program. Possible benefits of the latter include eligibility for scholarships at the university’s honor society.Mobilians are nuts about pecans
The Alabama Pecan Festival takes place in nearby Tillmans Corner every first weekend of November. Aside from enjoying live music, carnival games and loads of pecans, attendees can also see the crowning of the Pecan Festival Queen.Close to the highway and between Mobile and Mississippi
US Highway 90 passes by the south end of Terrace Hills, and from there, Interstates 10 and 65 are a short distance away. Downtown Mobile is 20 minutes away by car, and Pascagoula, Mississippi is 40 minutes away. Wave bus route 18 passes through Cottage Hill Road each way but only once an hour.Barbecue, seafood and spicy paletas
When it comes to serving up a delicious barbecue dinner, Meat Boss really is the meat boss, voted “Best Barbecue Restaurant” by readers of Lagniappe Weekly. If residents are more in the mood for some under-the-sea fare, they might stop by K&D Seafood for jumbo shrimp and other entrees served with sides like fried okra and sausage links. For dessert with a spicy kick, residents visit Jefe Paletas for their Mexican ice pops with flavors like mango tajin. A few shopping centers can be found along Cottage Hill Road, with supermarkets like Publix and Walmart Neighborhood Market.
