Old Southern charm in historic Washington Square
This historic neighborhood is primarily composed of early 20th-Century homes, ranging from ranch-style and bungalows to Southern Colonials and Greek Revivals. A few 1980s builds are scattered throughout, but many of these houses have stood for a century or more. Many homes include ornamental details, like carved columns and picket fences. Local realtor Lauren Jackson, who has been selling homes in the area for years, says, “You wouldn’t live here if you didn’t want an old home.”
Homes in Washington Square usually sell in the $250,000 to $300,000 range after an average of 30 days on the market. As these are historic homes, any plans to dramatically alter the facade of a home will require approval of the Mobile Review Board. However, updates to the interior, like modernizing the kitchen or the house’s wiring, are allowed and have been proven to increase property value, increasing the value to $600,000 or more.

A historic namesake park
Parks are the social hub of the neighborhood, especially the namesake Washington Square Park. For over a century, residents have been enjoying the park. The park spans an entire city block, providing plenty of green space for sitting or strolling under the thick canopy of branches from the abundant trees. A large fountain, complete with cupid and dolphin statues, serves as the centerpiece of the park, but the cast iron deer statue is the more popular photo op to visitors.
More variety lies in the western part of the neighborhood at Crawford Murphy Park. Residents can play a friendly game of tennis on one of the courts, or let their children play on the swings or slides at the park. Dog owners are welcome, as the park has specific space for four-legged patrons.

St. Patrick’s Day and Mardi Gras traditions
Washington Square is in the heart of the city’s annual Mardi Gras as both a stop on the parade route and a destination for parties. Many residents open their homes for parties hosted through one of the Oakleigh Historic District’s many social societies. Local restaurants also get in on the fun, offering specials and welcoming guests who want to keep the good vibes going.
Callaghan’s Irish Social Club is more than a restaurant. The establishment brings the community together to enjoy local musicians through a regular calendar of live music.
