Over to Westhill and far away
The residential neighborhood of Westhill is just south of the University of South Alabama in West Mobile, but the community’s appeal goes far beyond proximity to campus. “It’s a great location near everything West Mobile has to offer. You’re 5 minutes from restaurants, shopping and the hospital,” says Carolyn Hasser, a Realtor with Roberts Brothers who has lived in Mobile for 40 years and has sold homes there for 15. In addition to modest ranch-style homes and cottages, homebuyers will also find larger Colonial Revival builds, condos, townhouses and apartment units. Prices vary widely from $150,000 to a small cottage to $630,000 for a custom-built Tudor Revival.
Westhill is also close to Ascension Providence Hospital.
One might find cozy patio homes in Westhill, neatly built on elevated lots.

Modest homes, grand homes, condos and more
Housing options differ from subdivision to subdivision, different homes attracting different crowds. “Ridgefield has older, bigger homes and a lot of doctors and businesspeople,” Hasser says. “Along East and West Drive, you’ll find a lot of students and littler traditional homes and condos.” All of Ridgefield’s streets also offer sidewalks, whereas they can be more sporadic in other subdivisions. Smaller ranch-style homes and cottages sell for between $150,000 and $250,000. Ridgefield’s Cape Cod, Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes span from around 2,500 to 4,000 square feet and sell for between $350,000 and $600,000. Detached condos and townhouses can also be found on the north side of the neighborhood, usually going between $200,000 and $250,000.
The University of South Alabama is next door to the Westhill Neighborhood.

Schools with robust educational programs
Students can attend E. R. Dickson Elementary, C. L. Scarborough Middle and Murphy High School. Dickson Elementary and Murphy High earn C-plus ratings from Niche, and Scarborough Middle earns a C-minus. Murphy High boasts the second oldest International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in the state of Alabama. Students can also participate in the school’s Military Leadership Academy, which takes students on field trips to air bases, military museums and more. The University of South Alabama is right across Old Shell Road and under a 15-minute walk for most residents. “The school has been growing, and it’s got about 16,000 students, so it’s kind of a big deal now,” Hasser says. “They have a new football stadium, Hancock Whitney, which seats about 25,000. They have all the major sports, like football, baseball, tennis and golf.”
Westhill teens might attend Murphy High School.

Events at the park and downtown
Children don’t just go Langan Park in the summers to watch plays, they go to perform, like through participating in the Playhouse in the Park youth theatre group. “It’s for kids, but it’s the most advanced theater program in the area, as opposed to the other local ones that are just for fun,” Hasser says. “Some of the kids will go on to act in college.”
