Westhill
Suburban Neighborhood in Mobile, Alabama
Mobile County 36608
Modest homes, grand homes, condos and more
Housing options differ from subdivision to subdivision, different homes attracting different crowds. “Ridgefield has older, bigger homes and a lot of doctors and businesspeople,” Hasser says. “Along East and West Drive, you’ll find a lot of students and littler traditional homes and condos.” All of Ridgefield’s streets also offer sidewalks, whereas they can be more sporadic in other subdivisions. Smaller ranch-style homes and cottages sell for between $150,000 and $250,000. Ridgefield’s Cape Cod, Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes span from around 2,500 to 4,000 square feet and sell for between $350,000 and $600,000. Detached condos and townhouses can also be found on the north side of the neighborhood, usually going between $200,000 and $250,000.Parks and rec
Westhill residents have access to an assortment of green spaces a quick distance. 720-acre Langan Park doesn’t just offer playgrounds, picnic areas and tennis courts, the park is also home to the Azalea City Golf Course, the Mobile Botanical Gardens and the Mobile Museum of Art. A mile to the east, residents will find the Country Club of Mobile, and two miles south is Medal of Honor Park, which boasts sports fields, a disc golf course and a dog park. Hiking and biking trails can be found by the university, but the verdant campus is fun to stroll around in general.Schools with robust educational programs
Students can attend E. R. Dickson Elementary, C. L. Scarborough Middle and Murphy High School. Dickson Elementary and Murphy High earn C-plus ratings from Niche, and Scarborough Middle earns a C-minus. Murphy High boasts the second oldest International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in the state of Alabama. Students can also participate in the school’s Military Leadership Academy, which takes students on field trips to air bases, military museums and more. The University of South Alabama is right across Old Shell Road and under a 15-minute walk for most residents. “The school has been growing, and it’s got about 16,000 students, so it’s kind of a big deal now,” Hasser says. “They have a new football stadium, Hancock Whitney, which seats about 25,000. They have all the major sports, like football, baseball, tennis and golf.”Events at the park and downtown
Children don’t just go Langan Park in the summers to watch plays, they go to perform, like through participating in the Playhouse in the Park youth theatre group. “It’s for kids, but it’s the most advanced theater program in the area, as opposed to the other local ones that are just for fun,” Hasser says. “Some of the kids will go on to act in college.”A Mobile neighborhood with a lot of mobility
The Wave bus lines 1, 4 and 16 pass by Westhill, taking residents downtown, to the airport and to shopping centers, but locals should be aware that the bus only runs once an hour. Many residents prefer to get around by car, Airport Boulevard and Old Shell Road being major thoroughfares. USA Health Providence Hospital is around a 10-minute drive for most residents, and Mobile Regional Airport is just a few minutes west. Downtown Mobile is about a 25-minute drive away.Shopping and dining internationally in Westhill
Several restaurant chains can be found just along Airport Boulevard like Texas Roadhouse and Chick-fil-A, and a Publix is further down the road to the east. At Jerusalem Café, diners can enjoy tasty hummus, lentil soup, shawarma and other Middle Eastern favorites, topped off with baklava for dessert. Or residents can sail across the Mediterranean and enjoy Northern Italian staples like Bolognese lasagna at Via Emilia. Taking Airport Boulevard further east, residents can be at shopping centers like Springdale and the Bel Air Mall in about 15 minutes.
