Folks in Yorkwood enjoy feeling removed from the busyness of the city but still being close to good schools and shopping. “It’s a great location because people have an easy drive to downtown, and the beach isn’t too far either,” says Kay Corley, Realtor with Roberts Brothers Realty, born and raised in the Mobile area. Commuters have a 15-mile drive downtown or to the Alabama Shipyard. The neighborhood is also 2 miles south of Mobile Regional Airport, so flights are convenient, but it may cause some noise. The suburban communities have neatly kept lawns and spacious cul-de-sacs that provide a quiet environment for 1990s ranch-style and Colonial Revival homes with a median price of $260,000. Neighborhood students may attend some of the better-ranked schools in Mobile County, all within a couple of miles of many homes, including Baker High School, which is graded a B-plus by Niche. Residents also get groceries and household items about a mile away at Walmart and Publix. Folks enjoy the warm Mobile weather while strolling on neighborhood sidewalks or playing at West Mobile County Park.
1990s ranch-style and Colonial Revival homes
Yorkwood has two main suburbs, Oak Forest and Irongate, with wide streets and spacious cul-de-sacs lined with sidewalks and neatly kept lawns. These communities were developed in the 1990s, making them slightly newer than many closer to the city. Most homes range from a three-bedroom ranch-style for $175,000 to a four-bedroom Colonial-inspired brick Craftsman for $260,000. Many folks drive less than a mile for outdoor activities at West Mobile County Park. The park has multiple baseball and football fields where people can work on the game. Kids also come to the park for local rec league games.
Mardi Gras and the New Year’s Moon Pie drop
“Everyone in Mobile goes All out for Mardi Gras; it’s a special time,” says Corley. “The whole city shuts down for the festival, and kids get let out of school.” Despite being synonymous with New Orleans, America’s first Mardi Gras celebration was in Mobile. The first two weeks of February are full of parades and parties leading up to the main festival. “The other unique Mobile event is the Moon Pie drop on New Year’s Eve,” says Corley. Everyone gathers downtown to watch a giant homemade Moon Pie get dropped to ring in the New Year.
