"Very rural, farm-heavy and lovely"
As the Schuylkill River winds northward from Reading, it eventually leads to Centre Township. Realtor Dave Mattes of RE/MAX of Reading simply describes the area as “very rural, farm-heavy and lovely.” Like other remote Berks County townships, Centre Township averages about 1 person per acre, roughly 1 acre per residential lot. Larger groupings of its nearly 4,000 residents can be found in Centerport, the village-like borough at the township’s heart. Otherwise, this is an area for those seeking pastoral, no-fuss living, though its proximity to Reading is convenient for commuters. Meanwhile, outdoor enthusiasts are a quick drive from two public hunting areas and a 6,100-acre park featuring a central lake.
From well-maintained mobile homes to multi-acre estates
Centre Township has homes for every rural lifestyle and price range, from five to seven figures. Centerport features the highest concentration of homes, including some townhouses and Colonials from the 1800s. Home styles throughout the township vary between mobile homes, recently built townhouses, mid-20th-century bungalows and ramblers, Cape Cods and split-level houses. The average homebuyer will spend in the mid-$300,000s on a local property. However, well-maintained mobile homes start around $70,000, which might get a move-in-ready two-bedroom. Homebuyers can find a three-bedroom 2010s townhouse in the mid-$200,000s or a four-bedroom 2000s Colonial in the mid-$400,000s. Prices peak at around $1.5 million for five-bedroom homes on nearly 100-acre parcels.
Schools on either side of the river
Centre Township’s placement within the Schuylkill Valley School District makes it “desirable” for families, according to Mattes. Indeed, the public schools serving the area all boast relatively high Niche ratings, including Schuylkill Valley Elementary School. This K-4 school operates across the river to the southeast and has a B-plus rating. Next door, Schuylkill Valley Middle has a B rating and accommodates grades five through eight. Finally, ninth through 12th graders attend the B-rated Schuylkill Valley High School immediately to the south. Here, teens can earn STEM and language credits for college through dual enrollment courses and explore careers in construction, healthcare and more. Alternative schooling in Centre Township is available at The King’s Academy, a private Christian school with an A-minus from Niche.
Water and land sports aplenty
Having the Schuylkill River immediately east of Centre Township is a pleasant feature for residents, though it hardly adds to the area’s traffic. “There’s a little bit of fishing that goes on there, but we’re not overwhelmed with outfitters who do boat tours,” Mattes says. Anglers can also drive a few miles south to Blue Marsh Lake, a massive park whose 1,150-acre lake welcomes swimming, boating and fishing. Visitors preferring dry land can play beach volleyball or explore 30 miles of hiking and biking trails. More athletic facilities are available at the Centerport Borough Recreation Area, including a soccer field and a basketball court. Pennsylvania State Game Lands Nos. 110 and 280 cover hundreds of acres within a few miles of the township, abuzz with deer, morning doves and other game.
One Italian restaurant in the township
Centre Township is light on shopping and dining, leading most residents to run errands in communities across the river. “The borough of Leesport has some of the amenities homeowners are looking for — shops, restaurants and a grocery store,” Mattes says. Amato’s Pizza and Pasta is one of the township’s only currently running eateries. Established in 2000 by a local husband-and-wife duo, this easygoing Italian eatery serves all the favorites, from pizza and pasta to stromboli and sandwiches.
About half an hour from Reading
State Route 61 runs east of the river, offering Centre Township residents a route to Reading in the south and Hamburg in the north. Some Reading commuters — especially those south or west of Centerport — are better off taking backroads. Most locals can reach Reading within 30 minutes or so.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
