Overlooking the state border
Aptly named Overlook is a neighborhood that looks out onto downtown Moline, the Mississippi River and the Illinois-Iowa state border, making it part of the Quad Cities area. “Overlook is three minutes up the hill from all the activity of downtown Moline,” says Candice Shamsie, former Overlook resident and current Broker at Ruhl & Ruhl Realtors. Some Overlook homes “get seasonal river views of the Mississippi when the leaves fall from the trees.” Overlook includes well-preserved, historic properties as well as single-family homes.
Turn-of-the-century Illinois cottages
There is a slight incline to many of Overlook’s sidewalk and tree-lined streets. It’s common for homes in this area to have a small front patio and a few steps leading up from the sidewalk to the front door. Many homes are cottages built in the early 1900s with three to four bedrooms. Most on the market are between $75,000 and $125,000, averaging around $100,000. Some residents rent homes for around $1,400 per month.

Fun for history buffs and sports fans
The Victorian-era Deere-Wiman House and Butterworth Center are not on the market, but residents can take advantage of all the historic and cultural programming they offer year-round. These properties belonged to the John Deere family and are now preserved thanks to the William Butterworth Foundation. “They host a lot of community events with free music, garden walks and holiday activities,” says Shamsie. “People take prom pictures and wedding pictures there. It’s free to walk the grounds. The landscaping is beautiful with big, mature trees.” For 21st-century entertainment, locals cheer on the minor league ice hockey team, Quad City Storm, at Vibrant Arena downtown. Additionally, the Spotlight Theatre hosts a Candlelight Concert Series and ComedySportz puts on family-friendly improv comedy shows.
