Classic cottages and renovated American Foursquares set a traditional tone

Uptown Moline stands out for its early 20th-century homes, from workers' cottages to American Foursquare homes. Spanning about 50 blocks between 12th Avenue and 19th Avenue about 2 miles from the Mississippi River, Uptown Moline was designed to accommodate families who could easily walk to schools, local markets and nearby parks. The tidy cottages and handsome two-story homes with balconies, wrap-around porches and multi-gabled rooflines echo scenes from black & white movies where kids play ball in front yards and ride bicycles through well-appointed parks. Even though changes are evident—some homes are converted to duplexes and more cars are parked on the streets today than 100 years ago — the overall vibe is one of residential comfort, style and convenience. “Locals have always called Uptown ‘Old Towne,’” says Candice Shamsie, a Ruhl & Ruhl Realtors broker with 22 years of real estate experience. “Even though several nearby neighborhoods have their own place names, including Overlook, Uptown Moline, Stephens Park and Old Towne, locals call the broader area ‘Old Towne’.”

1920s traditional homes welcome renovators and investors

Century-old hardwood trees provide shade as residents stroll the sidewalks and cycle along Uptown Moline streets. Walkways welcome guests to the doors of front and side gabled homes. Some homes have shutters, and many have covered front and back porches. Buyers will find a mix of renovated cottages, American Foursquare homes, and fixer-uppers ranging from bungalows to two-story homes from the late 1800s. Recently sold two-bedroom cottages range from about $40,000 to $100,000. American Foursquare homes have recently sold from $100,000 to $260,000. While there are more than 1,000 single-family homes in the neighborhood, buyers will also find some condominiums and apartments.

Neighbors walk to grocery stores, pizza joints and novelty stores

Residents can walk to Jerry’s Market for groceries, get a haircut at AMG Barbers, and eat at several local restaurants. Casual options include Top Hat Pizza and Restaurante El Mariachi. SouthPark Mall is the closest multi-store shopping location. Everyday essentials can be found at Jewel-Osco, a regional chain that offers a pharmacy, gas station and groceries.

Live music and professional ice hockey

Rascals Live Music Venue on 15th Street welcomes artists from across the country, including Alice Cooper, Brides of Destruction and John Corabi. With a full bar and standing room only, the venue can hold about 400 people. The Vibrant Arena, at the riverfront, is a 12,000-seat coliseum that hosts concerts and sporting events, including home games for the local Quad City Storm, a professional minor league ice hockey team. Disney on Ice returns every holiday season, and Cirque Du Soleil performs in springtime.

Moline High’s boys soccer team was undefeated in 2023

Students can attend schools in the Moline Unified School District No. 40, with a B-plus Niche grade. Uptown Moline homes are within walking distance of C-rated Lincoln-Irving Elementary and C-plus-rated John Deere Middle. Moline High School, rated B-plus, serves nearly 2,000 students, including over 250 with special needs. In the fall of 2023, the boys' soccer team had an undefeated season. St. Paul’s Lutheran School and Seton Catholic School are also within walking distance of the neighborhood. These two faith-based schools provide prekindergarten through the eighth grade.

Stephens Park is the largest in the area

Though the neighborhood does not have a park within its boundaries, five city parks are within a 1-mile radius. The closest is Stephens Park, one of the largest in Moline. It occupies 27 acres from Fifth to 15th avenues. Its busiest attractions are its Rolle Bolle courts and three baseball fields. People use the basketball and sand volleyball courts and enjoy walking and running in the open green spaces. New playground equipment was installed in 2023, including multiple slides, a merry-go-round, swings and climbing structures. At the John Deere Pavilion on River Drive, kids can climb on several of its largest and most unusual machines, from farm tractors to massive construction vehicles. John Deere, who is buried in the Quad-Cities, developed a new version of the venerable steel farming plow in the 1840s, and the modern-day corporation is based here. “John Deere is an important part of the community,” says Cheyenne Khounnha, Realtor with Landmark Realty of Illinois and a real estate agent for over 10 years. “As one of the largest area employers, they’re a big part of Moline and Old Towne’s story.”

Quad Cities International Airport is 3 miles from Uptown Moline

Uptown Moline has several MetroLink bus stops along 16th and 19th avenues. The nearest major highway is Interstate 74, which crosses the Mississippi River into Iowa. Uptown Moline is 165 miles west of Chicago, less than 5 miles from the Quad Cities International Airport, and 3 miles from the UnityPoint Health-Trinity Moline hospital.
