Local organizations, churches aid Bawcomville residents
Bawcomville is a rural neighborhood on the outskirts of West Monroe in Ouachita Parish characterized by small to medium-sized homes, including a number of mobile homes. Heavily industrial, Bawcomville has faced challenges with poverty and crime above the national average. “There’s a lot of people just trying to make it,” says Jimmy Russell, a lead organizer with the Bawcomville Outreach team at Family Church in West Monroe. Community efforts are strong, with organizations like the Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Louisiana, Bawcomville Hope, and local churches providing essential services, such as distributing food and school supplies.

Low-cost homes and land
Many homes were built between 1970 and 1990, and the area has a mix of homeowners and renters with a notable vacancy rate of about 28.7%, which is higher than most U.S. neighborhoods. The community’s housing stock includes many low-cost homes, some of which are vacant and in need of repair. At the same time, cost-efficient properties and land parcels can be a boon to investors and first-time homeowners. Empty lots can range from $15,000 to $100,000, while a two-bedroom single-story house can cost between $45,000 and $85,000. Manufactured homes can range from $25,000 to $85,000. A three-bedroom ranch can cost between $75,000 and $135,000, although potential homebuyers may find the occasional five-bedroom ranch on sale for $150,000 to $225,000.

The Bawcomville Redneck Christmas Parade
While the area has its challenges, residents still have a sense of humor, which is most clearly seen during the holiday season. “One thing they do to kind of make fun of themselves — but they have a blast doing it — is they have the Bawcomville Redneck Christmas Parade,” Downhour says. “And they all put in their tractors and old cars and whatever. They'll throw toilet paper, they’ll throw ramen noodles. They'll throw just crazy things out there.” The annual event helps raise money, canned food and toys for families in the community. In 2023, the event raised enough funds and food to help more than 100 children and their families have a happy holiday season.
Schools in the Ouachita Parish Schools District
Kids can attend Lenwil Elementary School before heading to Riser Middle School, both of which receive a B-minus from Niche. Teens can graduate from West Monroe High School, which receives an A-minus. Members of the Ouachita Parish Board of Education began seeking bids in April 2024 for a new $4 million sports facility at the high school, which will serve the 1,000-plus student-athletes who use the existing building. Economically, the area has a lower average per capita income compared to most U.S. neighborhoods with a high rate of childhood poverty. Only 43% of people aged 25 and older hold a high school or equivalent degree. “Rescue Church does a lot to help out with getting GED high school diploma equivalencies for that area,” says Mike Downhour, director of membership and community engagement for the Monroe Chamber of Commerce.
Educational opportunities abound at Riser Middle School.
Lenwil Elementary School's mission is to provide academic and social skills for success.

Paper mill causes strong odors
The Graphic Packaging International paper mill produces a strong and distinct sulfur smell and thick clouds of smoke throughout the day. Some residents have complained that odors and chemicals from the paper mill can cause headaches and breathing irritation. Homes on the west and south sides of the community are at higher risk of flooding due to Cheniere Lake and the Ouachita River, respectively.
Fishing and wildlife spotting at Cheniere Lake Park
There are no parks in town, but residents can take a short drive south to get to the Bawcomville Recreation Area, a green space with a boat launch next to the Ouachita River. There, residents can cast a line to catch bass, shad and catfish. To the west are Cheniere Lake and Cheniere Lake Park. The park is a tranquil area for walks along the boardwalk and kayaking under tall Cypress trees swathed in Spanish moss and blossoming southern magnolias. The lake itself spans 3,000 acres and is a popular wildlife-watching area. Keen eyes can spot alligators, swallows, egrets and snakes.
