Southwest Monroe
Urban Core Neighborhood in Monroe, Michigan
Monroe County 48161
Two distinct housing sections
The western half of the neighborhood is known to some locals as the "W Streets," given many street names beginning with the letter. "That area has very hardworking people who take great pride in their properties," Nickelson says. "It's a wonderful community to live in with many middle-class families and workers." Ranch-style homes, Cape Cods and cottages from the 1950s range in price from $160,000 to $210,000. The small but well-maintained lawns usually have detached garages at the end of straight and narrow driveways. Emergency vehicle sirens from Monroe County Ambulance occasionally grace the otherwise quiet suburban streets. On the eastern end of the train tracks are larger and even older homes. American Foursquares, workers' cottages and Victorian mansions from the 1890s sell between $50,000 and $190,000. Condition, not size, determines the houses' cost. "There are more rental properties, so people have less stake in where they live, and house conditions vary more," says Tom Wagner, a realtor at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services who has lived in Monroe his whole life. Gravel alleyways intersect the gridded streets, leading to off-street parking and a spot for trash collection. Built in the early 21st century are the area's newest properties. The red-brick townhouses have no backyards, but private parking garages are underneath each unit. The two- or three-bedroom connected properties sell for between $150,000 and $190,000.A brand-new park and a photo opportunity
Near the "W Streets" is Hoffman Park, a small neighborhood space with a playground and a swing set. Locals can have a picnic or play a game of tag on the regularly mowed, large, flat field. Father Cairns Park is on the other side of the neighborhood, east of Telegraph Road and the train tracks. Built in the last five years, the park has a splash pad, a playground and courts for pickleball, tennis and sand volleyball. The newly paved walking loops provide a smooth surface for dog walkers, joggers and bikers. Though Memorial Park doesn't provide much space to run around or any athletic outlets, it offers a photo opportunity: Spelt out on the small hill with contrasting red and white flowers is the city name, "MONROE."Zoned for three different elementary schools
Depending on where a student lives in Southwest Monroe, they may attend one of three elementary schools. Waterloo Elementary School is rated a C-plus by Niche, while Custer Elementary Campus and Arborwood Elementary School are rated a C. Monroe Middle School is just southeast of the neighborhood, across South Monroe Street. The school is rated a B-plus and feeds into Monroe High School, which is rated a B-minus. Monroe Public Schools has a school-of-choice option available for families in the district. To attend a school outside the regular zone boundaries, students must first be released by their resident district school and accepted to their school of choice through application.A popular religious institution
A pillar of the community is St. Michael the Archangel Church. The tall brick steeple with gothic spires and decorative cornices towers over the area's main street. Inside, ornate paintings and carved statues line the sky-blue walls – meant to signify the heavens. Churchgoers walk or drive to the cathedral for mass, weddings, funerals and weekly meetings. A private school, St Michael Campus of the Monroe Catholic Elementary Schools, also operates out of the church's associated buildings and is unrated by Nitch.Major employers a short drive away
Monroe's largest employers are within a few miles of the neighborhood. DTE Energy – Monroe Power Plant is 4 miles east, along the coast of Lake Erie. La-Z-Boy headquarters and ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital are 2 miles north, across the River Raisin. Buses serve Monroe regularly Monday through Friday, while rides are through reservations on Saturdays. The Lake Erie Transit office is in the middle of Southwest Monroe. While houses differ from east to west, sidewalks are a constant in the neighborhood, lining the front yard of nearly every home. Toledo is 21 miles southwest, and Detroit is 41 miles northwest. Both large cities have airports with a comprehensive list of airlines and flights.A dining experience from the 1950s
One doesn't have to leave their car to enjoy a sit-down meal at Monroe's Original Hot Dog. After parking under the bright orange awning, patrons are visited by a carhop server who takes and delivers their orders. Their signature chili dogs and root beer floats are brought out on a tray fitted with clamps that attach right to the car's windows. Less than a mile from the pristine lawns of the "W Streets," Partyville Liquor has more than just alcohol for a backyard barbeque. The store also carries firewood for roasting marshmallows, propane for cooking burgers and snacks to munch on. Locals can visit the Family Dollar at South Telegraph Road and West Front Street for pantry staples and simple housewares. A Kroger is also nearby, just past the southeast boundary of the neighborhood.
