A rural, woodland setting close to Monroe in the Sky Valley
Woods Creek is a rural community in the Skykomish River Valley, otherwise known as Sky Valley. It's a scenic environment in the Cascades foothills, with mountain views, waterways and evergreen forests. "Living in Woods Creek, you'll be kind of nestled up in the woods a little bit," says Melody Dazey, economic development and tourism manager for the Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce. The river valley is named after the people of the Skykomish tribe, inhabitants of the area for thousands of years.
"People here wouldn't necessarily say they live in Woods Creek; they'd say they live in Monroe," says Marlene Rouleau, a Realtor with Windermere Real Estate. She has worked in the Monroe office for more than two decades. Monroe is a small city about 5 miles from Woods Creek.
Property owners are helping to restore Woods Creek
Woods Creek flows from Lake Roesiger, then converges with the Skykomish River in Monroe. It's one of the most important streams for salmon production in the Snohomish River watershed. "Woods Creek is one of the best places to see pink salmon," says Kristin Marshall, the Snohomish Conservation District's habitat restoration and floodplain management program director. The pink salmon come back every odd year. "In 2025, we'll see tens of thousands coming up Woods Creek from late September to early December."
Increased water temperatures, sediment, pollutants and blockages from debris have threatened the creek and its wildlife. The Re-tree Woods Creek Initiative started over a decade ago, with trees added along the creek and its tributaries. "We are continuing to work with private and public property owners along Woods Creek," Marshall says. "The trees aren't quite tall enough to be shading the stream. But we have absolutely seen improvements in water quality," Marshall says.
Outdoor recreation, Wallace State Park and a golf course
Recreational pastimes include kayaking, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing. Marshall recommends Al Borlin Park, near downtown Monroe, as a great place to see salmon during the season. Wallace Falls State Park, about 13 miles east of Woods Creek, is known for its hiking trails.
The Blue Boy West Golf Course and Event Center on Florence Acres Road was a ranch before being converted into a golf course. It has daily tee times, golf leagues and golf camps. Stevens Pass, a ski resort about 49 miles to the east, brings many outdoorsy tourists past Monroe.
