Friendly, historic enclave near Montgomery hotspots
Some locals will refer to Capitol Heights as “Midtown Montgomery’s friendliest neighborhood,” and it’s easy to see why. With frequent community events, historic homes and proximity to all of Montgomery’s major attractions, this neighborhood appeals to homeowners with a variety of tastes, preferences and budgets. “It’s such an eclectic area,” says Amylynne Blake, longtime Capitol Heights resident and Realtor with Wallace and Moody Realty. “I love these older homes. They’re well-built." To her point, some date as far back as 1905. Blake: "These houses have soul."
Craftsman cottages with updates
Homes here were built in the popular styles of the early 1900s, and today a lot of that character remains. Craftsman cottages make up the majority of the neighborhood, and many historic homes have been renovated with modern kitchens and bathrooms. Prices range from $70,000 to $330,000 depending on various factors, including the home’s size, age, and possible renovations. “These houses tend to run small, but you’re getting a lot of square footage for what you’re paying,” says Martha Givens, a Realtor with eXp Realty. “They make for fantastic starter homes.”
Spacious front yards are a common feature, and residents take full advantage of them. The Capitol Heights Civic Association recognizes standout front yards with the Yard of the Month award. There are frequent beautification efforts in the community, including updated street signs. Stellar holiday décor is also recognized during the winter holidays and Halloween. The friendly competition makes for incredible displays throughout the neighborhood.
The neighborhood is very walkable, and according to Amylynne Blake, you’ll meet people from all over the country because the area has many Airbnbs. “A lot of the people who live here are also historic preservation folks,” adds Blake. “They know a lot about the history of the homes and Capitol Heights in general.”
Renamed Julian High scores NFL-bound athletes
School-aged residents attend Capitol Heights Middle School, home to the Bulldogs. There’s a lot of pride around the school’s athletics, with football, basketball, volleyball and softball teams to join. The school has a Parent Involvement Association to help spearhead activities and incentives intended to engage children of all learning levels. The school’s social worker runs a food pantry with the area’s food bank to provide for needy families. Of note, students at this school are required to adhere to its uniform dress code.
Teenagers attend Dr. Percy L. Julian High School, which changed its name from Robert E. Lee High School in September 2023. Home to the Phoenix, this school also serves Maxwell Air Force Base residents. The school has a fantastic athletics program, with several alums going on to be professionals; at least 10 former students went on to play for the NFL.
3-acre Louis Armstrong Park anchors neighborhood green
The nearby Paterson Field baseball stadium has been home to professional ballgames since 1949. Today, the ballpark is used by local high school and college teams. The stadium has a maximum capacity of 7,000 people and has hosted the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship for 20 years.
Louis Armstrong Memorial Park sits among mature trees on the corner of Madison Avenue. The 3-acre park serves as a focal point of the neighborhood, with open green space, benches and a playground. It is not named after the famous jazz musician, but a different Louis Armstrong who in Montgomery is just as revered. In this case, the late Louis Armstrong served as pastor of Morningview Baptist Church for 40 years.
Vickers Park is another great gathering place for residents of Capitol Heights. The park offers benches and open play space. Community events are often held here and in Louis Armstrong Park. One of the most popular events is the National Night Out, where neighbors gather and enjoy grilled food, bouncing houses for the kids and generally having a night of relaxation and socializing.
Midtown museums, bites and boutiques a short stroll away
While the neighborhood itself doesn’t contain many dining and shopping options, it’s within walking distance of Midtown Montgomery and its wealth of museums, restaurants and boutiques. But what this neighborhood has plenty of are character and community.
