Recreation in Camp Oakdale and the Thames River
In Montville, the Fair Parks Conservation Center spans over 40 acres of protected land, including a small pond and trails winding through the forested preserve. The park appeals to bird watchers and anglers who enjoy the respite. Camp Oakdale Town Park is one of the area’s most popular recreation spaces, featuring pickleball and tennis courts, athletic fields and the Montville dog park. Boaters can access the Thames River from the Dock Road boat ramp or explore the waterways along Horton Cove by kayak or canoe.
Entertainment at Mohegan Sun and local events
Mohegan Sun is an entertainment destination located just north of Oxoboxo River. The expansive resort offers a mix of attractions, including two casinos, an arena and an amalgamation of dining establishments and retail shops. The multi-purpose Mohegan Sun Arena, with its 10,000-seat venue, hosts performances, sporting events and concerts. Recent acts include Fleetwood Mac and Dierks Bentley.The Montville Farmers Market takes place seasonally at Camp Oakdale’s large pavilion. Every Tuesday in June through September, dozens of local vendors line the park to sell fresh produce and handmade goods. The market has a weekly theme, such as Native Market Night and Kids Night, with local musical talents that perform as shoppers browse the market.
Classic architecture includes farmhouses and colonials
A mix of single-family homes is peppered on quarter-acre to 2-acre lots along Oxoboxo River’s gentle slopes, creating the rural feel the neighborhood is known for. Most homes are established farmhouse styles and colonials, with ranch-style homes and traditional American Four Square examples also common. Prices for single-family homes typically range from $177,000 to $450,000. The Hillcrest Community, a 55-plus subdivision in Oxoboxo River, features an array of ranch homes with one- to two-car garages that list between $200,000 and $300,000.
College Prep at Montville High School
Montville School District serves students in Oxoboxo River. Kids can start their education at Mohegan School, which earns a B-minus from Niche, for kindergarten through fifth grade. Leonard J. Tyl Middle School receives a C-plus grade and feeds into Montville High School. The B-graded school offers a well-rounded curriculum with classes spanning arts, business and technology. A collection of mom-and-pop shops
A few dining establishments and conveniences, including auto shops and other services, are scattered along State Route 163. Locals stop into Friendly Pizza and Restaurant for stacked grinders and classic pizza pies, or enjoy an extensive beer list, loaded hot dogs and Mexican-inspired fare at Brown Derby Lounge Bar. Best in Fresh Foods and a Stop and Shop are located north of Oxoboxo River along the Norwich-New London Turnpike for groceries.
North to Norwich, south to New London
State Route 163 runs the length of Oxoboxo River, connecting to Montville within 3 miles. Two additional major thoroughfares – Interstate 395 and the Norwich-New London Turnpike – run north-south parallel to each other. Norwich sits 8 miles north of Oxoboxo River, while New London is a 6-mile drive south. Residents can get to the Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport within a 54-mile drive.
