Shared amenities and values in sprawling Suncrest
Suncrest is a dynamic and highly desired neighborhood encompassing some of Morgantown’s top employers, as well as shopping centers, parkland and top-rated schools. It’s the site of West Virginia University, J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital and Mon Health Medical Center — three critical anchors within the city. Industry and a wave of newly constructed homes keep the neighborhood up to date, though residents say that Suncrest still has the tight-knit community and walkable atmosphere it had in the 1960s. “When you can get out and relax and enjoy your environment, that’s really a big plus,” says Matthew Cross, a lifelong resident and the president of the Suncrest Neighborhood Association. He recalls his childhood fondly, and the neighbors who looked out for him as he walked to school each day. “A lot of Suncrest has remained the same as it was back in the last century. We just have bigger houses.”
A hub of Morgantown employers
The neighborhood’s many employment opportunities are a primary draw. “Suncrest is one of the hottest markets in town — very appealing to people working in the hospital systems and WVU,” says Melissa Hornbeck, associate broker with Old Colony Realtors and the 2023 West Virginia Association Realtor of the Year. Suncrest is also home to a Department of Energy lab, and the former Mylan pharmaceutical facility has been converted into offices, labs and manufacturing space by the WVU Innovation Corporation.
The Mon Health Medical Center is an important hospital for the Suncrest neighborhood.

Sought-after homes above the Morgantown median
Suncrest is a sprawling area, encompassing many home styles for varied needs. Despite differences in age and appearance, Suncrest homes are generally priced above the Morgantown median. “There are different parts of the neighborhood,” Hornbeck says. “In old Suncrest, you see remnants of working-class ranch homes from the ‘60s, but their property value is very high.” Older two- and three-bedroom homes typically start around $225,000, though more updated versions can sell just above $400,000. Homes throughout Suncrest built from the 1990s onward often sell between $385,000 and $650,000, with brand-new construction occupying the highest end. This diverse architectural landscape includes stately Colonial Revivals, ranch-style homes, New Traditionals and split-levels, often on plots large enough for a driveway and grassy front and backyards. Cross says some homes are rented out to WVU students, though this shouldn’t worry buyers: “Generally those students are respectful because the properties are a little more upkept and they’ve got more space.”
Suncrest has several pockets of townhouses, including around the Suncrest Towne Centre. Two- and three-bedroom units typically ranging between $160,000 and $390,000. In 2021, historic rainfalls caused immense flooding in Suncrest, a continued concern for residents and businesses close to Popenoe Run.
Newer construction homes can be found on a few streets in Suncrest.

Community gardening at Turtle Park
Suncrest residents have an abundance of parkland and nature trails within the neighborhood. Cyclists can hop on a trail at West Run Woods, and hikers of all levels can enjoy some forest bathing at the Core Arboretum, a 91-acre expanse with guided flower and bird walks and river views.
Krepps Park has trails of its own, as well as tennis and basketball courts, youth-sized baseball fields and a public swimming pool with a pirate ship splash pad. Residents can also stop by the newly renovated Turtle Park, which has a playground and new features the community implemented themselves. “We just got the neighbors together and installed a new pollinator garden down there,” Cross says. “We got the children involved and they put a little fairy village in the middle of the garden.”

Top-rated Monongalia County schools
Students attend North Elementary, which Niche ranks the No. 1 public elementary school in the state, or Suncrest Elementary. The latter opened in 2017; “We really petitioned the city council to get that school located within the neighborhood,” Cross says. Suncrest Middle won the 2024 West Virginia Science Bowl, and Morgantown High offers ACT and SAT test preparation for college-bound students. All four schools receive an A from Niche.
Suncrest is also home to the main campus of West Virginia University, which sits overlooking the Monongahela River. The school hosts more than 25,000 students.
Suncrest Elementary School has an overall rating on an A on Niche.

Retail and restaurants at Suncrest Towne Centre
Cross says the biggest development since his childhood is Suncrest’s retail and restaurant scene. “People can walk or ride their bike to the grocery store, banks, restaurants,” Cross says. Clusters of bars, restaurants and stores sit throughout the neighborhood, including the Suncrest Towne Centre, which has a Kroger, clothing and other retailers and chain favorites like Pies & Pints, known for craft beer and inventive pizzas. Closer to campus, bars like Kegler’s and Mountain Mama’s Tavern fill up on game days. For dinner, students and longtime residents alike enjoy Mexican food at Los Mariachis or Black Bear Evansdale, known for live music and vegetarian and vegan options. Nearby Stefano’s is a favorite upscale option, serving handcrafted cocktails and Italian entrees in a low-lit setting.

Suncrest residents enjoy a walk, though highways are accessible
Suncrest has a culture of walking, despite hills and a lack of sidewalks in some areas. “A lot of neighbors walk their pets and their children around the neighborhood streets, which makes for a great community atmosphere,” Cross says. “We get to know each other that way.” Route 705 connects residents to local highways and the Morgantown Municipal Airport. Drivers can reach downtown via Highway 19, a 2.5-mile drive. In summer 2024, the West Virginia Department of Highways is expected to begin construction on the neighborhood’s Van Voorhis Road. The project will widen the road and relocate water and sewer lines.
Though public transit does not run everywhere in Suncrest, there are several stops concentrated near the university and Ruby Memorial Hospital. Travelers can hop on a Greyhound or pick up other transit options at Mountaineer Station.
Suncrest Neighborhood Association gathers the community
Suncrest has an active neighborhood association which meets quarterly and hosts community events. Get-togethers include a fall mingle, gardening events at Turtle Park and a Halloween children’s parade. In the summertime, neighbors bring potluck dishes to Krepps Park for an annual picnic, complete with live music coordinated by the association.
Suncrest is a beautifully kept area with tight knit neighbors.
Families love bringing the children to play at Krepps Park.
