A community named after Oregon's tallest peak
About 10 miles from the base of Mount Hood—before the roads get noticeably windier—the Mount Hood community is anchored by a town hall and a U.S. Forest Service ranger station. Along with approximately 14,500 acres of pear, apple and cherry trees, the region is known for its proximity to the mountain. “There’s a big mountain biking community and trails during the summer,” says Susan Freston, an administrative coordinator for the Hood River Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Reserve, who has lived in the area for over 30 years. “During the winter, it revolves around skiing—cross country and downhill—and snowboarding. We’re less than 20 minutes away from the mountain.”

Hiking trails with views of Mount Hood
In conjunction with Mount Hood, the neighborhood has several popular hiking spots. The East Fork Hood River rushes through Toll Bridge Park, its waters cascading over the stones that dot the middle of the channel. Hikers can trek along the forested trails that follow the river and camp out overnight on designated sites. The snow-capped peaks of Mount Hood hover in the distance, occasionally piercing through a low layer of clouds. Across the highway, the sandy Oak Ridge Trailhead leads up hills smattered with yellow wildflowers to views of neatly parceled farmland below, fortified by rolling hills in the distance. The trail system accommodates horse trailers and mountain bikers, too. With the forested areas that neighbor Mount Hood on the west, the community may be at an increased risk of potential wildfires and decreased air quality.

Destinations on the Hood River Fruit Loop
Though local businesses, like the Mountain Valley Butcher Block, serve the rural community, most residents travel to nearby Parkdale or Hood River for groceries and other shopping. “Within Parkdale, there’s a small grocery store, McIsaac’s Store, and three restaurants,” Freston says. “Parkdale and Mount Hood are close-knit communities.”
Mount Hood is part of the Hood River Fruit Loop, a route of fruit stands, orchards, wineries and lavender fields. The Draper Girls Country Farm allows visitors to pick flowers, pears and apples—some from trees over a century old—meet the farm’s goats and sample its homemade, unpasteurized cider. Grateful Vineyard—another Fruit Loop destination—and its high-elevation sparkling wine has been featured on Top Chef. Locals can enjoy refreshing varietals and pizza while gazing at neat rows of vines with Mount Hood in the distance.
