Sleepy Hollow Village

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Sleepy Hollow boasts a rich history that intertwines with its literary legacy. The village gained prominence through Washington Irving’s short story, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” published in 1820. Irving’s tale of the headless horseman and Ichabod Crane put Sleepy Hollow on the literary map, influencing popular culture. Notable attractions include the Old Dutch Church and Burying Ground, dating back to the 17th century. The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is a resting place for notable figures, including Irving. The iconic Headless Horseman Bridge and the beautiful Phillipsburg Manor further contribute to the village’s haunting allure. The Edge on Hudson, Sleepy Hollow Manor and other housing options
Housing in Sleepy Hollow accommodates various lifestyles. Luxury condos and apartment complexes near the Hudson River offer access to a waterfront promenade and in-progress multi-use community, The Edge on Hudson. On an old General Motors complex site, the project intends to transform the river’s edge, and Lerner says, “It keeps expanding. Right now, they’re building a supermarket. It will be a whole world once it’s done.” Properties here typically run in the $1 to $2 million range.Near downtown Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown are four-square homes and brick apartment complexes with urban sidewalks and cars parked in front of them. Close are various subdivisions, like Philipse Manor and Sleepy Hollow Manor, with homes that have unique architectural aspects. Residential streets near tourist attractions are wide and walkable, but as one goes further into Sleepy Hollow, streets narrow, and, on some, it might be hard for two cars to pass. Amongst thick leaves intersecting with powerlines, there are basketball hoops at the end of driveways and playsets in backyards. Away from the water, Sleepy Hollow spreads out into tranquil country and farmland. Single-family homes typically start around $800,000 and continue to rise into the millions.
Downtown Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown
Along Broadway, Historic Tarrytown meanders into Sleepy Hollow. Old streetlamps illuminate leaves falling onto two-lane roads in autumn, and Colonial- and Victorian-era buildings house shops and restaurants. An old clock ticks in the middle of a median. At night, The Tarrytown Music Hall’s marquee flashes at passing cars from a Queen Anne theatre with decorative brickwork. This area bleeds into tourist attractions, like The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and Old Dutch Church, as well as residential subdivisions. From Broadway to The Hudson River are rows of local shops and restaurants. This is a great place to spend a weekend afternoon window shopping. Popular spots include Bridgeview Tavern on Beekman Avenue, a casual tavern with river views, and Hoseman Bagels, where locals can grab a morning coffee and breakfast sandwich.Rockefeller State Park Preserve, Phillipsburg Manor and more
Rockefeller State Park Preserve is the former country estate of the John D. Rockefeller family and William Rockefeller. Open to the public year-round from sunrise to sunset, the park’s old carriage roads meander across acres of open, sunlit fields and through forests of oak and maple trees. Marked by the Tarrytown Lighthouse, Kingsland Point Park spans 18 acres on the eastern shores of the Hudson River. There’s a riverside promenade for walking or running, a playground, picnic areas and green spaces with enough room to throw a ball around.Phillipsburg Manor and Sleepy Hollow Cemetery are tourist attractions and popular spots for walking. Phillipsburg Manor, set against the backdrop of The Hudson River, is a historic gem, showcasing a meticulously restored 18th-century estate with a manor house, barns and other structures in colonial architectural styles. Sleepy Hollow Cemetery’s tombstones and walking paths go up and down grassy hills, with large maple and pine trees throughout the grounds. Prominent figures such as Washington Irving and Andrew Carnegie are buried here.

The Great Jack-O'-Lantern Blaze and TASH Farmers Market

This family-friendly event draws visitors from near and far.In Patriot’s Park, in Historic Tarrytown, along gentle hills, near a stone bridge and pedestrian space, The TASH Farmers Market serves the community every Saturday from May to October.
