A pocket of peace, there isn't much beyond rolling hills and farmland in Pennsylvania’s Upper Tyrone Township, and that’s community's appeal. It's situated about 50 miles east of Pittsburgh by way of Interstate-76, “People who move here are looking for a country atmosphere a lot of times,” says Lynne Kendrish, a Realtor with Century 21 Frontier Realty, who is a longtime area resident. “There are some nice developments that are upscale, but most of it is rural farmland and acreage.”
Fixer-upper cottages and move-in-ready ranch-styles with elbow room
Those looking to move here will discover a wealth of single-family homes built from the early 1900s to the present day, from a 1,000-square clapboard cottage that needs updating for $70,000 to a 3-bedroom ranch-style home on an acre for $240,000. Homes typically sell within 45 days. “When the virus happened and everything shut down our inventory was basically nil. Once everything opened back up, we had buyers that wanted homes and they were flying off the market,” Kendrish says. “It’s slowed down a little bit, but they’re still selling relatively quickly.”
Southmoreland School District offers a public school pipeline
Public school students may attend Southmoreland Primary Center for kindergarten and first grade, Southmoreland Elementary for second through fifth, Southmoreland Middle and Southmoreland Senior High. The primary school earns a B from Niche, while the rest all earn B-minus grades. In addition to its academic courses, the high school offers a variety of student organizations, including Random Acts of Kindness and Philosophy clubs.
Softball and Fourth of July fireworks at Loucks Park
The 4-acre Loucks Park in Scottdale features basketball and tennis courts, a playground and other sports amenities. “Loucks Park gets a lot of activity because of the softball games there in the summer months,” Kendrish says. “Scottdale also holds a Picnic in the Park there every August. There are really good fireworks at the end.”
Big-box shopping and local eats in Scottdale and Connellsville
While Upper Tyrone Township offers a country feel, it’s far from remote. The small towns of Scottdale and Connellsville are less than 5 miles away. Connellsville hosts nationally known big-box stores, such as Walmart Supercenter, and Scottdale has a slew of independent shops and eateries. Among the historic brick buildings in downtown Scottdale are Bad Rabbit Café & Roastery, Bel Air Antiques and the Geyer Performing Arts Center. Michael’s 50’s Diner is the go-to spot for burgers, milkshakes and retro decor, including a life-size Elvis statue and vintage jukebox. Fox’s Pizza Den, known for its 21-slice “Big Daddy” pizza, is another local favorite.
From ski resorts to stadiums, attractions are within about an hour
Entertainment on a larger scale is just a short road trip away. Frank Lloyd Wright’s residential, architectural wonder “Fallingwater” in Mill Run and Seven Springs ski resort in Seven Springs are less than 30 miles from Upper Tyrone Township. Professional hockey, soccer and football games await in Pittsburg. “Upper Tyrone Township is low-key. It’s as laid back as you can get these days. It’s a great place for someone who enjoys the country, but everything is close,” Kendrish says. “You are just a hop, skip and a jump from all these wonderful places.”
