Convenient, suburban and amenity-rich, Dune West has central resort-style living

The Mount Pleasant neighborhood of Dunes West is a riverside golf community with backyard docks, mature Lowcountry landscaping and an array of amenities. Boating and golf are a big part of the lifestyle, says local Kimberly Ritter, Realtor with Carolina One Real Estate. The neighborhood has a championship golf course and is surrounded by marshes, creeks and the Wando River. Only 15 miles from Downtown Charleston, this community offers resort-style living without sacrificing a convenient location close to schools, shopping and dining. “People like that kids can actually bike to school here,” Ritter says. “And some people even bike to the grocery store or dry cleaners.”

From 1990s starter homes to new construction waterfront mansions

Dunes West’s development began in the early 1990s. Today, the neighborhood has more than 20 subdivisions, each featuring different housing styles, from classic Colonial Revivals to New Traditional houses and contemporary construction. Three-bedroom properties are on the west side, in subdivisions like Palmetto Hall, and roughly list between $600,000 and $800,000. Bigger properties, with four or more bedrooms, are found throughout the community and range in price from about $800,000 to almost $3 million. Condos and townhouses generally fall between $350,000 and $700,000. Homeowners pay biannual fees to the Dunes West Property Owners Association, and multifamily communities are additionally managed by sub-HOAs. Homeowners should check their potential property's flood zone to gauge the necessity of flood insurance. The Atlantic coast's hurricane season ranges from early June to late November.

Highly rated schools within a 5-mile drive

Niche reports that Charleston County School District is the best district in the Charleston area and grades it an A. All of Dune West’s zone schools are within a 5-mile drive. Laurel Hill Primary, graded B-plus, teaches students between 4K and second grade. For third through fifth grade, students attend Charles Pickney Elementary, graded A. Thomas C. Cario Middle and Wando High also earn an A. The high school holds the No. 3 spot on Niche’s list of the best public high schools in the Charleston area. It has strong athletics and fine arts programs, ranging from varsity golf and tennis to marching band and dance.

The Dunes West Golf and River Club’s amenities

The Dune West Golf and River Club’s 18-hole course winds through the heart of the community. Ritter says a membership is required to use the course. “The membership is not included in the purchase of homes, and neither are the amenities,” she says. Premier memberships, only available to Dune West homeowners and residents, provide access to all of the club’s recreational offerings, including an athletic and swim club featuring two pools, a racquet club with pickleball and tennis courts, and a boat ramp. Those without private docks can rent space at the club’s dry storage facility. Ritter says there’s also a community dock on Wagner Creek. “You can’t leave your boat there, but it’s where you can pick people up and drop them off,” Ritter says. “A lot of people like to just go to the dock and enjoy the sunset, too.” Wagner Creek flows into the Wando River, where locals boat, kayak, fish, jet ski and more.

Dunes West may feel remote, but shopping and dining options are nearby

As remote as Dunes West might feel, Lowes Foods, Harris Teeter, and Walmart are within a 5-mile drive of the neighborhood. Casual shopping plazas with shops and chain restaurants are on South Carolina Highway 41 and U.S. Highway 17. Local eateries are also in the area, such as Wando River Grill, a waterfront American restaurant popular among boaters thanks to its adjoined marina.

U.S. 17, South Carolina 41 and the best route into downtown Charleston

U.S. Highway 17 and South Carolina Highway 41 are the main ways to reach the gates of Dunes West. A few Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority bus stops are along U.S. 17, as is the closest medical center, Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital, roughly 5 miles away. U.S. 17 is a straight shot into downtown Charleston, about 15 miles away. Charleston International Airport is closer to 20 miles away.
