AboutFamily-oriented Park West is a big neighborhood with a small-town feel

Park West is a big neighborhood that feels more like a small town. The master-planned Mount Pleasant community was initially developed in the late 1990s with family-oriented lifestyles in mind. By design, parks and playgrounds are within walking distance of each home, and sought-after schools are within biking distance. “The school district is the big draw,” says local Kimberly Ritter, a Realtor with Carolina One Real Estate. “And there are trails that take you all the way to the schools, so kids don’t have to bike on main roads.” Shopping and dining options are also right in the neighborhood, as are doctor’s offices and Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital. “Once people get in there, they stay,” Ritter says. “They just upgrade or downsize to a new house in the neighborhood.”

A variety of homes and a broad range of price points are offered in Park West

Park West is home to 29 distinct subdivisions built by various contractors. This offers a variety of property types and styles, from Minimal Traditional starter homes to sleek, contemporary multimillion-dollar mansions. Prices begin with condos in complexes like The Battery and Madison, where prices range from just under $300,000 to just over $400,000. Duplexes are in The Gates subdivision, typically priced in the $400,000s. The Gates and other enclaves like Preston also have townhouses, which range from the mid $400,000s to the mid $700,000s. Three-bedroom single-family homes, with the exception of newly constructed houses, range from around $600,000 to the mid $800,000s. Four-bedroom houses typically price between $700,000 and $1.3 million, but those on the waterfront might cost more than $2 million. Houses with five or more bedrooms, like the estates in Masonborough, roughly range between $900,000 and $2.5 million. Residents are required to pay annual fees to the master association and their subdivision’s homeowner’s association. Homebuyers should confirm their potential property’s flood zone to determine the necessity of flood insurance. Hurricane season ranges from the beginning of June to the end of November on the Atlantic coast.

A-rated Charleston County School District has excellent schools in Park West

According to Niche, the Charleston County School District earns an A and is the best district in the area. The website grades Laurel Hill Primary a B-plus, while Charles Pinckney Elementary, Thomas C. Cairo Middle and Wando High each earn an A. Wando High, home of the Wando Warriors, is known for its robust extracurricular activities, from varsity sports teams and fine arts programs to volunteer work and social clubs.

Abundant recreational facilities against a natural, Lowcountry backdrop

“All of Park West’s amenities – the pools, the tennis courts, the racquetball courts – are included in the HOA,” Ritter says. Recreational facilities are throughout Park West, connected by paved pathways that folks walk, jog, bike and golf cart on. The Tennis Center has six courts on the neighborhood's west side, right by the two community pools. Down the road, the Park West Recreation Complex is a magnet for local athletes and a center for youth sports programs. Facilities include a playground, a swimming pool, ballfields, sand volleyball courts and a fishing lake. Another spot where resident anglers can fish is the Park West Crab Dock. The pier juts 60 feet across Lowcountry marshes to overlook still water and green codgrass. Nearby, Laurel Hill County Park offers miles of running trails and almost 650 acres of natural scenery.

Shopping, dining and other conveniences are right in the neighborhood

Park West residents don’t even have to leave the neighborhood to find the closest vet, pharmacy, or Costco. On the community's south side, the intersection of Park Avenue Boulevard and Faison Road has a couple of convenient shopping strips with local restaurants like Lola Rose, a Mediterranean eatery with a famous sister restaurant called The Grocery in downtown Charleston. More options for shopping and dining are just south of Park West along U.S. Highway 17.

Two highways, public transit and a 20-mile drive to the airport

The main ways in and out of the community are U.S. 17 and South Carolina Highway 41. The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority has several bus stops on U.S. 17. Charleston International Airport is a little over 20 miles away from Park West.
