Shemwood
Locals launch their vessels from a private dock
Getting out on the water is a prime pastime in Shemwood, home to a popular boat landing and storage spot for the neighborhood’s large population of mariners. From here, locals can take off on a paddleboard or kayak for a quiet ride along Shem Creek. Scenic Shem Creek Park is across the waterway with long boardwalk trails known for stunning sunset views. It’s also a wildlife hot spot, home to egrets, crabs and other coastal creatures. “Because you’re close to Old Village, a lot of people make the trip to Alhambra Park, which has views of the Charleston Harbor,” Wray says. The scenic park is in the next neighborhood, and with three playgrounds canopied by large oaks, it’s a cool, comfortable spot for all who visit.Mixed housing minutes from the water
With street names like Lazy Lane and Seagull Drive, Shemwood is a beach community through and through. Towering palms and moss-draped oaks stretch over large grassy lawns flanked by homes positioned steps away from the marshy shoreline. “Shemwood has more ranchers than surrounding neighborhoods,” says Andrew Scherl, a Realtor at EXP Realty and frequent local seller. Many of the neighborhood’s established homes date to the 1950s and ‘60s — ripe for renovations and modern touches. The quiet residential streets don’t follow a cookie-cutter design and instead feature a range of styles from Charleston Singles to modern farmhouses and new builds. The neatly landscaped lots reach up to a half-acre, which Wray says is larger than in most neighborhoods in Mount Pleasant. Prices generally range from $650,000 to $900,000, but some waterfront properties with private dock access can top off at nearly $2 million.Shared meals at Shem Creek Crab House
Coleman Boulevard is walkable for most Shemwood homeowners, who head over to browse the local shops or grab a bite at restaurants like Mozzo Deli, a neighborhood favorite for sandwiches and prepared foods. Locals can enjoy a meal with a view at waterfront restaurants like Shem Creek Crab House, a classic beach dive specializing in seafood dishes. Harris Teeter is closest for weekly groceries, but many shop for produce at the Mount Pleasant Farmer’s Market on Tuesday afternoons.Mount Pleasant Academy ranked top in South Carolina
Mount Pleasant Academy is ranked fourth among South Carolina elementary schools, rated A on Niche. More than 1,000 students attend the A-rated Moultrie Middle, where they wear casual uniforms to class. Students later filter into Lucy Beckham High School, which opened in 2020. It is renowned for being the only school in the state to offer veterinary science classes through its career technology education program. There are also several private and charter options nearby for those interested in exploring schooling alternatives.Five miles to downtown Charleston
It’s roughly 5 miles from Shemwood’s quiet streets to downtown Charleston, positioned immediately across the Ravenel Bridge, which some homeowners can see from second-story windows. Most locals drive, but Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) bus stops line Coleman Boulevard.
