Apple Valley
Cooling off in Apple Valley Lake
Watersports are a key feature of life on Apple Valley Lake. The lake is a good place to kayak, sail and water ski. It is also stocked with walleye and crappie. The Apple Valley Golf Club includes an 18-hole course as well as a clubhouse. Golf Digest gives the public course a 4-star rating, and it's open from April to November. After afternoons on the fairway, club members can stop by the bar and grill to unwind. Homeowners pay membership fees or tee times. Apple Valley's three private beaches are popular for tanning and swimming, and are open to all homeowners and renters. The beaches also have grassy fields where people have picnics. The neighborhood clubhouse has amenities like a fitness center, pools and tennis courts. The stone and timber building often hosts up to 100 people for events like wedding receptions and birthday parties. It will often host food trucks as well. Ariel-Foundation Park, Mount Vernon's largest and most popular green space, is about 12 miles from Apple Valley. Visitors walk their pets, fish in its ponds and watch birds. The 250-acre green space has a trail network that traverses wooded patches, fields and marshes along Kokosing River. Mavis Island is in the center of the park and can be accessed using strips of land that cradle seven ponds. Visitors climb the staircase coiling up the Rastin Observation Tower, a former industrial smokestack, to overlook the terraced hills and well-maintained ruins of the old Pittsburgh Plate Glass Factory. Among these ruins are sculptures of twisted steel and blue piles of glass chunks.Lodge-style lakefront houses
Apple Valley has a leisurely culture because most of its homeowners stay in the neighborhood when they are on vacation. It's quiet gridded streets and lakefront homes complement that lifestyle. The neighborhood is not gated, but its amenities are private and can only be accessed by homeowners, their guests and renters. The houses that do not overlook the lake are the most affordable. These houses populate winding residential blocks on quarter-acre lots. Homebuyers can purchase two-story rustic cabins for as low as $270,000 and early 2000s contemporary styles for as high as $470,000. Ranch-style homes from the 1990s sell for between $290,000 and $350,000. There is new construction all around the lake. Newly built Craftsman-style houses sell for between $360,000 and $480,000. Waterfront houses on the narrow northern section of the lake are less expensive than those on the wider southern half of the lake. The lakefront homes are mainly designed with rustic materials like stone and timber, but there are also chicer builds with vinyl exteriors, large glass fronts and clean lines. Almost all houses have boat houses and docks that are good for relaxing with friends or fishing. "It's like a four-year waitlist to get your boat a spot in the marina," Snow says. Lodge-style homes on the northern portion of the lake sell for between $400,000 and $1.1 million. On the southern portion of the lake, lodges and modern farmhouse-style homes sell for between $600,000 and $1.6 million. Residents have to be members of the Apple Valley HOA.Dining just off Coshocton Road and shopping in Mount Vernon
Residents do most of their dining just off Coshocton Road, on the southern edge of Apple Valley. The Pub serves bar classics like burgers, wings and fries. People stop in to drink with friends and watch games on flat-screen televisions. Folks stop in Kelly's Pizza, a casual family-owned spot that also serves stromboli and subs. In the same building, Lakeside Barber & Shave Parlor is a classic spot with a barber pole out front and candy dispensers inside. There is also a Subway and a Domino's next door. People travel 6 miles east to Mazza's, a family-owned Italian restaurant that's been a Mount Vernon staple since 1939. "My parents brought me as a little girl to the original Mazza's location in the downtown," says Jan Hayden, who has lived in the area since the 1960s. The restaurant's busiest night is Monday, when every item on the menu that starts with an "M" is half off. Mount Vernon has a host of other eateries that Apple Valley residents frequent, but its retailers are also a big draw. Apple Valley homeowners take advantage of Kroger and Walmart for their grocery needs.
Fourth of July fireworks and the Mount Vernon Music and Arts Festival
Apple Valley and Mount Vernon host year-round events. On the Fourth of July, people gather on the beaches and take their boats out on the lake to enjoy a fireworks show. The Mount Vernon Music and Arts Festival, held every August, features three days of live music and local vendors. Mount Vernon's Front Porch Concert Series is held from June to August on East High Street, where historic homes line the streets. Food trucks and vendors park along the street as folk chord progressions and blues rhythms fill the air. Mount Vernon's Downtown Annual Holiday Parade includes first responders, the high school marching band and the local Elk's Lodge.Moderately-rated Knox County Public Schools
Year-round residents enroll their kids in Knox County Public Schools. "A lot of Apple Valley kids go to school in Mount Vernon and vice versa," Snow says. East Knox Elementary is 2 miles east of the neighborhood. East Knox Junior/Senior High School is next door and has 415 students. Both schools have B-minus Niche ratings. The school has a 92% graduation rate. The high school's English program offers classes specializing in subjects like British literature, mythology, gothic and horror literature, futuristic fiction and college writing.
Getting to Mount Vernon and Columbus
The neighborhood's streets are not lined with sidewalks, but the streets are quiet enough for folks to walk to the neighborhood's amenities. Downtown Mount Vernon is 8-½ miles west of Apple Valley via U.S. Route 36. Some homeowners live in Columbus, which is 60 miles southwest via Ohio State Route 229 and Interstate 71. Many homebuyers may have family and friends visit from outside the state, so they will likely take advantage of John Glenn Columbus International Airport, about 52 miles southwest via Ohio State Route 229 and Interstate 71.
