Howard, Ohio, is a small village of less than 260 people that is about 9 miles from the city of Mount Vernon. People move to Howard because it is a place where they can truly know all of their neighbors. Howard offers a truly small-town lifestyle and a peaceful rural charm. “I wouldn’t want to go back to the city,” says Bob Thomas, who’s lived in the neighborhood for 25 years. “There is no rat race. This is the kind of town you come to raise kids.” The cost of living is more affordable than bigger cities like Columbus and Cincinnati, and the pace of life is slower. Most of the neighborhood’s houses sell for less than $200,000, which is a major draw for homebuyers with limited funds. Many Howard homeowners work in retail businesses in Mount Vernon.
Walking to local restaurants
Residents walk less than a quarter mile to the Howard Hilton, an unassuming restaurant and dive bar with a big front patio and two Coca-Cola signs. On snowy nights, residents brave the elements to reach its warm interior, where football games play on the televisions, burgers sizzle on the griddle and neighbors share laughs over their beers. After school, teens hang out at Dirko’s Pizza, where they can play darts and chow on stromboli and subs. Mount Vernon serves the community’s retail needs. Less than 8 miles west of Howard, there are stores like Kroger, Walmart and Marshalls. Downtown Mount Vernon also has a plethora of local shops, like Kudos Co-Op, which features 24 different artists. “Our art collective includes woodworkers, blown glass artists, fiber artists and photographers,” says Liz Prather, who has been a member of the Kudos Co-Op for a year.
