Friendly, no-frills lakeside community
In Northwest Washington, about 9 miles east of Skagit Bay, sits the neighborhood of Lake McMurray. With homes nestled between the lake and the evergreens, this is a place for simple pleasures without the bustle of traffic. “People who live there just love it. Everybody is very friendly – they wave at each other,” says Mary Jo Reistma, Managing Broker at Brown McMillen Real Estate with two decades of experience. For retail and restaurant temptations, locals drive to one of the nearby towns like Mt. Vernon, 11 miles northwest.

Fishing, biking and hiking
Activities on the lake include canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, birdwatching and of course, fishing. “Lake McMurray is a no-wake lake. It’s relaxed and peaceful with perch, bass and trout,” says Laura Kaestner, broker associate with Re/Max Gateway. Kaestner lives in Lake McMurray part-time, though many residents live here year-round. The public boat launch is on the lake’s southeast shore. At the north end of the lake is the Sons of Norway private community and beach. To the west, biking trails wind through the hills. “Around the lake itself, there’s no hiking, but there is hiking around the area,” Kaestner says. Hikers can journey up to Monument Lookout, a modern art piece and unique punctuation to the otherwise forested landscape. Cyclists and joggers can also head to the paved Nakashima Heritage Barn Trailhead just south of Lake McMurray.

Homes provide peace and privacy
Lake McMurray has no stoplights – not even at the main intersection where Route 9 connects to Route 534. Tall trees shade roads and buffer sounds for the already-quiet neighborhood. Homes are scattered with plenty of privacy and space between them. Luxury cabins and midcentury ramblers can be found on the lakefront and a bit further removed from the lake, surrounded by trees. Prices range from about $550,000 to $770,000.
