Moyock offers new subdivisions close to outdoor attractions
Acres of farmland are broken up by modern subdivisions in Moyock. While most of the homes here are new, the area was first visited by colonial settlers in the late 1600s. Farms dominated its early industry, but the Currituck Inlet made it a port town that attracted oil and packaging companies throughout the 1800s. The inlet closed around the mid-1800s as the coast’s landscape changed, leading to a renewed local focus on agriculture. The further development of Hampton Roads to the north and the Outer Banks to the south has played a part in the region’s growth as a residential community. “It’s definitely got a small-town feel still, but it's only a short drive from the big cities,” says Kara Evalenko, broker for Real Broker, and a Moyock local that’s been selling homes in the area for eight years.
Modern home styles starting in the $400,000s
There are a few subdivisions with colonials and ranch-style homes from the late 1900s, but most houses available are contemporary properties built in the last 25 years. Homes are neatly arranged with a modest amount of front and backyard space. Houses also feature driveways, and most have attached garages. Homes here typically sell for $400,000 to $800,000. “You get more land, and you get more bang for your buck,” says Evalenko. Townhome communities like Shingle Landing Villas also offer three- and four-bedroom properties that usually go for $300,000 to $400,000.
Career and technical education programs at Currituck County High
Students may start at Moyock Elementary, which earns a B from Niche, before going to Moyock Middle, which also receives a B. Currituck County High gets a B-minus and offers career and technical education programs for fields like healthcare and carpentry.
Commuting via Route 168
Commuters can take State Route 168, also known as Caratoke Highway, to get in and out of Moyock. The route runs 15 miles south to Barco where it connects to U.S. Route 158 and Kitty Hawk. Route 168 also runs 20 miles north to Chesapeake and Interstate 64. The closest hospital, Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, is located 16 miles away. Norfolk International, the closest airport, is 30 miles away.
Community parks, beaches nearby
Shingle Landing Park is a community green space with a playground, tennis courts and a gazebo bridge over its pond. Currituck County Community Park is 17 miles south with sports fields for baseball and soccer, a playground and a skatepark. The Currituck Family YMCA is right next to the park with indoor and outdoor pools, an indoor gym and an indoor basketball court. Moyock locals can also easily access sandy beaches along the Atlantic, which are located just 30 miles north in Virginia Beach and 45 miles south in the Outer Banks. “We’re about 50 minutes from Kitty Hawk, and 50 minutes from Virginia Beach,” says Evalenko.
Food Lion, restaurants along Caratoke Highway
Shops and restaurants line Caratoke Highway, including Food Lion for essentials. The Moyock Farm Market has been selling fresh produce and local goods since 2017. There are plenty of chain eateries, as well as locally owned spots like Southland Restaurant and Catering, which has been serving American favorites since 1972. Residents can also drive 10 minutes north to Edinburgh’s shopping centers in Chesapeake for stores like Target and Walmart.
