A social community in southwest Muncie
On the southwest side of Muncie, Thomas Park-Avondale is an active neighborhood with plenty of ways to get involved in the community. Residents make friends at The Common Market, a jack-of-all-trades convenience store that also serves as a coffee shop, pizzeria, music venue and unofficial community center. They also hang out at the neighborhood's official community center, the Ross Community Center, as well as at the Maring-Hunt Library, which sits beside the local elementary school. "Maring-Hunt Library is on the south side of Muncie, right next door to South View Elementary," says Susan Fisher, Public Relations Supervisor at the Muncie Public Library. She explains that in addition to offering essential services like free legal aid and healthcare navigational resources, the library also provides social and educational programs too. Others utilize the library for its green spaces, which features picnic pavilions, community gardens and a quarter-mile walking path. "We're a real center point for the neighborhood," she says.
