A modest community near downtown Muskegon
Angell attracts those looking for a home priced under citywide norms, while at the same time a mile and a half from downtown Muskegon. “Angell feels like more than just its own neighborhood,” says Terry Puffer, a local Realtor and team lead with Five Star Real Estate. “It’s kind of part of downtown, but still very residential.” The neighborhood’s 50- to 100-year-old houses have a median price of $137,500, which is more than $50,000 below Muskegon as a whole. Residents can enjoy Angell’s leafy scenery with lots of trees in their yards, a neighborhood park, and even a cemetery, which is open for casual strolls.

Single-family homes with competitive prices
Angell’s grid-pattern streets are lined with sidewalks and homes dating back to the early 1900s. Two- to four-bedroom Craftsman-style bungalows and two-story cottages make up a majority of these houses. However, there are some mid-century ranch styles as well. Homes are typically built on approximately eighth-acre lots with mature greenery, some of which are next to empty lots. A fully renovated home sells for around $150,000 to $180,000. Those needing some work range from around $45,000 to $140,000.

Stores and restaurants on Getty Street and Apple Avenue
There are a few places to shop and dine out on Getty Street to the east and Apple Avenue to the north. Getty Street Grill is a community staple for breakfast and lunch, serving its famous hashbrowns for more than 20 years. Locals can also get Mexican food at Kayla’s Tacos, or head about a mile south to Mr. Scrib’s Pizza on Laketon Avenue, which Puffer describes as the best pizza in Muskegon. Residents can stop by K.B.’s Market, a small local corner store, selling meat and other groceries. There’s also a Walgreens on the corner of Apple and Getty and an Aldi and Dollar Tree a mile down the road. And of course, with downtown Muskegon less than 2 miles away, residents have plenty of shopping and dining options nearby.

Fresh air at McCrea Playground and Oakwood Cemetery
McCrea Playground is closest to those who live on the south side of Angell, especially so for those on Catwaba Avenue. The 9-acre park includes a large grassy field with playground equipment and a basketball court. People can also step into the more shaded area full of mature trees and picnic tables. McCrea is right next to two cemeteries, including Oakwood Cemetery, one of the oldest in Muskegon, where people enjoy going for walks. “There’s a lot of history at Oakwood,” says Puffer, “A lot of old headstones, unique larger structures and a lot of trees.”
