Glenside
Suburban Neighborhood in Muskegon, Michigan
Muskegon County 49441
Mid-century single-family homes
Glenside is made up of ranch-style homes and Cape Cods, with some Colonial Revivals mixed in, built on lots ranging from a tenth of an acre to a full acre. “Buying a house in Glenside is like buying a blue-chip stock,” says David Medendorp, a local broker of The Medendorp Real Estate Group. “It’s a very solid market. The homes were built before 1950 and they’re maintained at a very high level.” The reason the homes are so well-maintained is a mix of neighborhood pride and friendly competition. “We do a yard beautification contest every year,” says Courser, “And that inspires people to keep their yards looking nice.” Homes can range anywhere from 700 to 3,100 square feet, selling for $150,000 to $350,000, aligning with the citywide median of $220,000. The neighborhood is full of mature trees, which connects the residents with nature, whether relaxing in their backyards or walking on the sidewalk to McGraft Park, less than 1 mile away from every home.Pickleball, shuffleboard and curling at McGraft Park
While at the edge of the neighborhood geographically, McGraft Park is a center for community recreation. The 92 acres are full of mature trees that serve as obstacles for the disc golf course. There are 10 pickleball courts, 20 shuffleboard courts, a basketball court, softball field and two playgrounds. Perhaps the most unusual feature is the synthetic curling rink, which doesn’t require ice. Nature enthusiasts will enjoy being enveloped by the park’s greenery, along with its kayak launch and fishing spots in Ruddiman Creek, which leads to Muskegon Lake. Boaters are frequently out on Muskegon Lake, where there are no speed restrictions. It feeds into Lake Michigan, which is lined with sandy beaches, including Pere Marquette Park.Sherman Boulevard has some opportunities for entertainment. Sherman Bowling Center is more than just a place to bowl and play arcade games. It’s where people go for a good laugh at the Back Alley Comedy Club. There’s also Bat ‘n Club, which has two miniature golf courses with jungle and country themes along with four batting cages.
High school football state champions
Glenside is served by Muskegon Public Schools, which has a school choice program for elementary students. Those who don’t choose an elementary school are zoned to Bunker Elementary, which earns a C-minus grade from Niche. They’ll go on to Charles Hackley Middle School, which was built in 2023 with its first school year starting in 2024. Because the school is so new, it does not have a Niche score yet. Students continue to Muskegon High School, which gets a C grade. The high school is notable for its football program, which won the Division II state championship in 2023.Summer concert series and other community events at McGraft Park
McGraft Park has a bandshell used for events put on by the city, such as the McGraft Park Summer Concert Series. “They try to please different crowds,” says Mendendorp. “They’ll do ‘60s music one week, '70s the next, then some polka.” The Glenside Neighborhood Association also puts on events at the park’s community center, including an Easter egg hunt, a Halloween party and a holiday celebration with Santa. “We throw all kinds of events and we have such an amazing turnout,” says Courser. “If we need baked goods or anything, people are stepping up and volunteering and contributing. It’s awesome when you have a community that cares.” The Fourth of July is also a special occasion. The neighborhood association and volunteers walk the streets and plant American flags in each yard, and the flags stay there for the rest of the month.
A 3.5-mile drive to downtown Muskegon
Muskegon Area Transit bus service operates on Glenside Boulevard. It’s about a 3.5-mile trip to downtown Muskegon, which doesn’t include any highway travel. Both Interstate 96 and U.S. 31 are about 5 miles away. Muskegon County Airport is also about 6 miles away with Southern Airways Express flights to Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Grand Rapids' Gerald R. Ford International Airport is about 55 miles away for a wider selection of airline destinations.Shopping and dining on Sherman Boulevard
There are dozens of restaurants to choose from in and near Glenside on Sherman Boulevard. The Glenside Pub is most notable for its pizza and has been serving the community since 1984. Locals can head to Skeetown Tavern to enjoy Mexican food, cocktails and live music. Nauty’s is right next door offering a dive bar atmosphere with karaoke nights. There are a few grocery stores about 1 mile east on Sherman Boulevard, including Aldi and Gordon Food Service Store. Locals can also grab Mexican products at Supermercado San Jose.
