Homes sit between two creeks
Marquette is a neighborhood on the north side of Muskegon, built on a narrow strip of land between two creeks. “This neighborhood is a bit older than others around it, with most houses dating back to the early 1900s,” says Eric Shedd, a Realtor with Nexus Realty Muskegon. “While many of these houses were rentals for the last few decades, there’s been an increase in home ownership recently, as more young people move to the city for affordable starter homes.” Public schools within walking distance and a compact downtown under 3 miles west make Marquette a convenient residential hub in the heart of Muskegon.
Older houses get a new lease on life with modern renovations
Gridded streets and sidewalks frame the neighborhood with Marquette Elementary school and shared parkland in the center. Fences, neat gardens and ornamental trees are common, as is a varied selection of housing styles. “Some older houses here have recently gotten a new lease on life,” says David Medendorp, a Realtor with Medendorp Real Estate Group. “Investors with big pockets have put a lot of money into the neighborhood, so an older house might now have a brand-new kitchen, siding or roof.” Styles include bungalows, ranches and new construction contemporaries. Most houses are priced between $150,000 and $300,000. Townhomes and condominium rental communities are also available, with prices ranging from $860 per month for one bedroom to $1,200 per month for three bedrooms.
Ranch-style homes, some with new renovations, are common in the Marquette neighborhood.
Students growing up in Marquette benefit from the local elementary school’s Pre-K For All program. Marquette Elementary School, in the middle of the neighborhood, offers free full-day preschool for 4-year-olds on weekdays. “Plus, the Marquette Elementary School is the only one in the city that does Spanish immersion, so kids can learn a second language from kindergarten through 6th grade,” says Medendorp. “Kids can be fluent by the end of their time in the program.” Students may attend Marquette Elementary School, graded C- by Niche; Orchard View Middle School, graded C; and Orchard View High School, graded C+. Just east of Marquette, Muskegon Community College provides college credits and support services to high schoolers through its Early College Muskegon County (ECMC) program. Once graduated from high school, students may enroll in one or more of the college’s 80+ degree and certificate options. The publicly run Wesley School in the neighborhood is a center for special educational needs, serving students from ages 3-26 from surrounding school districts.

Picnics are common at Beukema Park
The creek bordering the neighborhood to the north, Fourmile Creek, does not have a designated park, but the open marsh field allows locals to stroll through or birdwatch. The closest park, Beukema Park, is adjacent to Marquette Elementary and features a playground, swings, a picnic area, a baseball diamond and a sports field with bleachers. The picnic area is covered, and tall trees shade the playground and swings. The large sports field is used for soccer, football both informally and by recreational sports teams. Ryerson Creek runs across the neighborhood's south side, forming a green buffer between otherwise-adjoining neighborhoods.
