East Muskegon neighborhood centered around a park
The sounds of a ball hitting a bat and parents cheering are all part of the experience of living in Sheldon Park, a neighborhood named after the area's hub for Little League games. About 2 miles east of downtown Muskegon, Sheldon Park is often referred to as East Muskegon, according to David Medendorp, broker of Medendorp Real Estate Group. "It's a pretty residential neighborhood with three elementary schools," he says. "The streets have sidewalks so kids can walk to school." Modest mid-century houses are the norm, and residents have the opportunity to be part of a neighborhood association that works to keep the community clean and engaged.
Ball games and playground fun at Sheldon Park
Sheldon Park, the neighborhood's namesake park, has three ball fields used by Muskegon East Little League. Youth baseball and softball games draw families to the park to cheer on kids and grab snacks from the concession stand. Mature red oaks surround the park and provide shade during ball games and for children playing on the new playground, which was installed in 2024.

Midcentury bungalows and ranch-style houses
Sheldon Park is predominantly made up of bungalows and ranch-style houses on lots of about a quarter-acre. "Most of the homes were built between the 1940s and '60s," says Medendorp. "But you'll find a few built before World War II." These single-family homes offer anywhere from 600 to 2,200 square feet of living space, with prices ranging from $55,000 to $225,000. The neighborhood has a few empty lots where houses can be built. There aren't many modern houses, but a 1,400-square-foot, three-bedroom ranch-style house built in 2023 sold for $260,000.
Many people in Sheldon Park live in midcentury bungalows.

Big box retailers and a staple candy shop
Much of the neighborhood's stores and restaurants are on Apple Avenue to the north and Getty Street to the west of the residential area. On Apple Avenue, there are such national retailers as Aldi, Dollar Tree and Citi Trends. The main road also has several fast-food restaurants from which to choose. Meanwhile, Getty Street has more local establishments, such as McDonald's Candies, a community staple that has been making homemade treats since 1941 using two chocolate machines. "We have a lot of regulars," says Jenny Ledesma, a sales associate at McDonald's Candies since 1997, "People come every week – sometimes twice a week." The most popular product is the Seafoam, which Ledesman describes best. "It's a spongy, chocolate-covered candy that just dissolves in your mouth. It's easily our best seller." There are some local restaurants as well, including Kayla's Tacos and Fish N Chicks, known for its hearty soul food.

Three elementary school options in Sheldon Park
Muskegon Public Schools offers a school choice program for elementary students. The closest option, Oakview Elementary, is on the neighborhood's south side and earns a C-minus grade from Niche. Students go on to Charles Hackley Middle School, which has yet to be graded since opening in 2024. Muskegon High School earns a C-plus, and the Big Reds football team won the Division II state championship in 2023.
Sheldon Park is also home to Three Oaks Public School Academy, a charter school that earns a C-minus grade and serves kindergarten through sixth-grade students. It's right next to Muskegon Christian School, a private, faith-based elementary school with a Spanish immersion program.

Neighborhood meetings, dumpster days and events
The Sheldon Park Neighborhood Association hosts monthly meetings to keep locals informed about what's happening in the neighborhood. They hold two clean-up days a year to keep the neighborhood looking clean. The association also plans community events, such as an Easter egg hunt at Sheldon Park, where participants can win prizes from local businesses.
A 2-mile drive or bus ride to downtown Muskegon
Commuters can take a Muskegon Area Transit System bus from any of the neighborhood's main roads, including Apple Avenue, which leads 2 miles west to downtown Muskegon. U.S. 31 runs along the east side of Sheldon Park, running north and south through the entire state of Michigan. It can also be taken 8 miles south to Muskegon County Airport. Flyers can take Southern Airways Express to Chicago O'Hare International Airport, though the carrier's single propeller-powered airplanes take more than 90 minutes to complete the trip, according to flight data. A new, jet-based airline is awaiting federal approval under the Essential Air Service program to take over the route, cutting flight time to 30 minutes.
