The quiet suburb surrounding the Muskogee Golf Club
Country Club offers a quiet, suburban atmosphere on Muskogee’s northeast side, a few miles from the city’s artsy, food-centric downtown. Homebuyers are drawn here both for the blend of calm and convenience and for the proximity to the private Muskogee Golf Club, the neighborhood’s namesake. “It used to be called the Muskogee Town & Country Club. They changed the name of the club, but everyone still calls the neighborhood Country Club,” says current resident Holly Rosser-Miller, an Interstate Properties Realtor. “You can walk to the golf course from basically anywhere. It’s an established neighborhood with mature trees, a pretty area to walk, and kids are always out riding their bikes.”
Single-family homes, some with land, sell for under $800,000
Colonial Revivals, New Traditionals and ranch-style homes are common. Many sit on spacious lots with manicured lawns, decorative hedges and garden beds. Semicircular driveways are lined with post oaks, sycamores and other neatly planted native trees. Prices range from under $100,000 to around $775,000. Large, custom-built New Traditional estates in subdivisions such as River Oaks and River Bend typically sell for the top end of the spectrum.
Summers here are hot, while winters are cold with some snowfall. The Arkansas River is prone to flooding, and properties east of State Road 165 are most at risk. Muskogee County, part of the Tornado Alley region, is vulnerable to tornadoes.
Muskogee High offers dual credit classes at Connors State College
Muskogee Public Schools, which gets a B-minus grade from Niche, offers controlled open enrollment. Country Club’s zoned schools include Tony Goetz Elementary, 6th & 7th Academy at Ben Franklin, 8th & 9th Academy at Alic Robertson and Muskogee High School. The elementary and upper middle schools get C-plus grades; the lower middle school is not rated. Muskogee High, which scores a B, has a dual enrollment program in which students can graduate with an associate degree from Connors State College. Dual enrollment classes are also available at the Indian Capital Technology Center, a technical school that shares a campus with Connors State College.
Muskogee Golf Club, the USS Batfish and riverfront recreation
The Muskogee Golf Club has been around since the early 1900s. In addition to the 18-hole course, there’s a pro shop and a clubhouse with an event space and a restaurant. On the Arkansas River, Muskogee War Memorial Park is home to the USS Batfish (SS 310), a World War II submarine. A self-propelled howitzer, cannons and other military artifacts are dotted around the surrounding grassy field. Port of Muskogee’s Three Forks Harbor, a few miles away, has public boat ramps and marina facilities, as well as a hiking trail. Rosser-Miller says the port is used more for industry than recreation. “There are two major ports in Oklahoma; this is one of them. For boating, swimming, that kind of thing, most locals go to Fort Gibson Lake,” she says, referring to the Sequoyah Bay State Park waterfront less than 30 miles north.
Shopping/dining on U.S. Route 62, in downtown Muksogee
U.S. Route 62, known locally as the East Shawnee Bypass, is lined with retailers like Lowe’s, Walmart Supercenter and Aldi. Chain restaurants, like Colton’s Steak House & Grill and Braum’s Ice Cream & Dairy Store, are also scattered along the main road. Downtown Muskogee has more locally owned shopping and dining options, with spots like Muskogee Brewing Company and Pisano’s Pizza filling the vintage brick storefronts between clothing boutiques and antique stores. The Katy District, Muskogee’s rapidly revitalizing downtown arts district, has cultural attractions, including the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, Muskogee Little Theatre and the Muskogee Civic Center. Three Rivers Museum, a regional heritage museum, partners with Roxy Theater to host Polar Express-themed pajama parties in November and December.
Bus stops, hospitals and highways connecting to Tulsa and OKC
Muskogee County Transit provides bus service to the area. MCT’s East Route picks up from stops at Country Club Apartments and shopping centers nearby, and runs to destinations around the city, including downtown. Medical facilities such as Muskogee GC Health Center and Saint Francis Hospital Muskogee, big local employers, are within about 7 miles of most homes. Oklahoma City is less than 150 miles west, a drive that usually takes about two hours without traffic on U.S. Route 69 and Interstate 40. The drive to Tulsa is shorter; the 50-mile drive northwest typically takes under an hour on State Road 351.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
