West Muskogee suburb close to Honor Heights Park and local employers

The west-side Muskogee neighborhood of Honor Heights offers an active suburban lifestyle, close to top local employers. Saint Francis Hospital Muskogee and Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center are located within about 5 miles of most homes. “The VA is one of our largest employers, and the Saint Francis Hospital is really growing. The neighborhood itself is an older, very stable one,” says Brian Kirk, a longtime local with almost two decades of real estate experience. Convenient commuting isn’t the only draw. The community’s namesake, Honor Heights Park, and the nearby Hatbox Field & Hangars are major players in the city’s recreation scene.

Single-family homes and land sell for under $400,000

New Traditionals, cottages and ranch-style homes line narrow streets. Many sit on spacious lots with grassy lawns and tall oaks, sycamores and sweet gum trees. Home prices start under $100,000 and rise to about $395,000; land typically sells for between about $30,000 and $150,000, depending on the number of acres.
Summers are hot, while winters are cold with some snowfall. Coody Creek is prone to flooding, and Muskogee County is vulnerable to tornadoes.

Recreation, events at Honor Heights Park, Love-Hatbox Sports Complex

“Honor Heights Park is one of our biggest things. We have all kinds of events there. Muskogee is close to 36,000 people, so we try to have something for everybody,” Kirk says. The more than 130-acre park features trails, an amphitheater, a playground and a splash pad, along with picnic areas and gardens. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, it transforms into the Garden of Lights, a walk-through holiday light show around a pond. In April, it hosts the city’s annual Azalea Festival. “It’s when all the azaleas are blooming, and people come from all over the country to see them,” says Interstate Properties Realtor Holly Rosser-Miller, a Muskogee local. “They also do Symphony in the Park shows, usually in June, where people picnic and listen, and there’s fireworks at the end,” she says. Rosser-Miller is a flutist in the Muskogee Community Band, which headlines the annual performance.

Love-Hatbox Sports Complex is a 60-acre athletic complex nearby. It hosts baseball, softball, soccer and football tournaments, and other outdoor events. The annual county and regional livestock show is held on the adjacent Hatbox Field & Hangars, which also hosts rodeos, concerts and the Exchange Club of Muskogee’s annual Chili & BBQ Cook-Off. River Country Water Park, also part of the complex, is an outdoor aquatic facility with slides, a lazy river and more.

Highly rated Muskogee High and Sadler Arts Academy

Muskogee Public Schools earns a B-minus from Niche and allows controlled open enrollment. Honor Heights students’ zoned schools vary by address. They may attend Pershing Elementary or Cherokee Elementary between preschool and fifth grade, both of which earn C grades. Older students go to 6th & 7th Academy at Ben Franklin, which is not rated, and 8th & 9th Academy at Alice Robertson, which gets a C-plus. Muskogee High is B-rated and offers a dual enrollment program that allows students to graduate with their high school diploma and an associate degree from Connors State College. Sadler Arts Academy is an A-minus-rated public magnet school in nearby Central Muskogee.

Dining on Okmulgee Avenue, downtown and shopping to the north

Restaurants are scattered along U.S. Route 64 and U.S. Route 62 Business, known locally as Okmulgee Avenue. Kirk recommends Runts Bar BQ & Grill, a no-frills, family-operated barbecue. It’s close to a Homeland supermarket, a Walgreens and several more eateries, like Lopez Grill Mexican Restaurant and Paradise Donuts. Downtown Muskogee’s Katy District has more restaurants and boutique-style shops. A few miles north, U.S. Route 62 has national chain retailers, like Aldi and Walmart Supercenter.

Quick access to Muskogee County Transit bus stops and highways

Muskogee County Transit provides bus service to the area. The Northwest Route runs from stops at Honor Heights Park, the Honor Heights Towers assisted living complex and others in the neighborhood to destinations like downtown and Walmart. Tulsa is nearly 50 miles away, a drive that takes a little over an hour without traffic on U.S. Routes 62 and 64. The almost 140-mile drive to Oklahoma City typically takes two hours in light traffic on U.S. Route 69 and Interstate 40.
