A quiet suburb in east Muskogee

Phoenix Village provides a peaceful, suburban lifestyle in eastern Muskogee, close to the Arkansas River. Through-streets are few and far between, and while State Road 165 is within a couple miles of most homes, traffic is rarely an issue here. “It’s kind of a dead-end area. Unless people are specifically going to houses in that area, they don’t drive back there, so it’s quiet. Kids can be out playing and riding their bikes without worrying about getting run over,” says Donna Elliott, a Muskogee local and Re/Max Realtor with over three decades of experience.

Single-family homes with spacious lots

The neighborhood’s subdivisions, like Circle Acres, Phoenix Village and Niblack Terrace, have a mix of New Traditional, Colonial Revival, Contemporary and ranch-style single-family homes. Oaks, pines and sycamores shade broad, well-maintained front lawns. Many properties have spacious, privacy-fenced backyards. Sale prices start under $100,000 and rise to about $300,000. Rentals in complexes like Phoenix Village Apartments, Raintree Apartments and Shady Hollow Apartments are also available.

Coody Creek is prone to flooding, and Muskogee County is vulnerable to tornadoes. Eastern Oklahoma summers are typically hot, while winters are chilly with some snowfall.

Muskogee High offers dual enrollment with Connors State College

Muskogee Public Schools, including Tony Goetz Elementary, 6th & 7th Academy at Ben Franklin, 7th & 8th Academy at Alice Robertson and Muskogee High School, serve Phoenix Village students. The elementary school earns a C-plus from Niche. The lower middle school is not rated, while the upper middle school gets a C-plus. Muskogee High, which scores a B, offers a dual enrollment program in which students can graduate with their high school diploma and an associate degree from Connors State College. Muskogee Public Schools allows controlled open enrollment.

The Oklahoma School for the Blind’s campus is close to the middle of Phoenix Village. The tuition-free school serves kids between preschool and 12th grade, with instruction in traditional academic subjects as well as Braille, independent living skills and assistive technology.

Outdoor recreation at Civitan Park, Bill Pool Park and on the river

Civitan Park, close to the heart of Phoenix Village, has picnic areas, playgrounds and a paved, looped trail. There’s also a seasonal sprayground, a community garden and an 18-hole disc golf course. Nearby, Bill Pool Park has a playground, picnic tables and a basketball court. Public boat access to the Arkansas River is available at Port Muskogee Three Forks Harbor, a little over 6 miles away. “You can go all the way down to Mississippi on it. I know several people who like to boat to Fort Smith, Arkansas, just to eat and come back. In a boat, it’s probably three hours away,” Elliott says.

York Street has shopping and dining options

York Street is lined with shopping options, including a couple of Homeland supermarkets, an Ace Hardware and a Family Dollar. Las Cazuelas and Senor Lopez are popular Mexican restaurants on the main road, close to fast-food chains like McDonald’s and Subway. Retailers like Hobby Lobby, Lowe’s and Walmart Supercenter are on U.S. Route 62, a few miles north. Locally owned eateries, boutiques and cultural attractions, like the Muskogee Civic Center and the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, fill the historic downtown Katy District and Depot District, also a few miles away.

Muskogee County Transit bus stops and highway access nearby

Muskogee County Transit’s East Route picks up from stops on York Street and runs to destinations like Walmart Supercenter and downtown. Saint Francis Hospital Muskogee and Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center, both top local employers, are within about 6 miles of most homes. Tulsa, over 50 miles northwest, is just under an hour-long drive away without traffic on State Roads 165 and 351. The about 140-mile drive to Oklahoma City, approximately 140 miles away, usually takes a little more than two hours via U.S. Route 69 and Interstate 40. The nearest international airport is in Tulsa, about 50 miles away.
