Grande Dunes is a golf course and beach club community
Grande Dunes offers a social lifestyle and a resort-style setting wedged between Myrtle Beach’s rolling shoreline and the Intracoastal Waterway. Locals can join the Grande Dunes Golf and Beach Club, home to an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts and an oceanfront swimming pool. And it’s these community spaces that make the Grande Dunes friendly. “Getting to know your neighbors isn’t a choice here,” says Caroline Hill, a Realtor with JSprings Group and a Grande Dunes resident. “You golf and play tennis with the same people every day, and when I walk to the beach, people stop their cars to talk.” U.S. Route 17, locally dubbed Kings Highway, is a major shopping and dining corridor spanning the community’s core. Though the highway attracts tourists and some hotels and vacation rentals are in the area, Grande Dunes mostly has full-time residents. “This is a place where you put down roots,” Hill says. “The people who live here have been here for years.”

Single-family homes, townhouses and condos are in Grande Dunes
The area’s earliest homes include mid-20th-century ranch styles. Mediterranean-influenced mansions from the early 2000s, and recently built New Traditional houses are also common. Oak, crape myrtle and palm trees often shade lawns, with the median lot size at about a quarter-acre. Some streets have gated access, and waterfront homes are typically built on stilts with private boardwalk access to the beach. The median single-family home price is around $670,000, though homes near the water may cost between $1 million and $6 million. Townhouses and a mix of high- and mid-rise condo complexes are also in the area. Depending on size and proximity to the water, prices for these multi-family homes can fall between $50,000 and $3 million. Tropical storms and high tides put parts of Grande Dunes in FEMA-designated, high-risk flood zones, so flood insurance is mandatory for some homeowners here.

Grande Dunes Golf and Beach Club is the community’s social spot
Though locals aren’t required to join the Grande Dunes Golf and Beach Club, Hills says most do. “I don’t think I know anybody in the neighborhood who isn’t a member.” There’s a one-time initiation fee of $30,000, and monthly dues range from $370 to $875, depending on a member's age and which plan they choose. The 18-hole course is framed by pine and oak trees and weaves around wetland terrain, with some holes backing up to the Intracoastal Waterway. Golfers can sip cocktails and eat chicken wings at Terraza 19, the on-course restaurant. In May, the club hosts the Myrtle Beach Classic, the city’s only PGA Tour event. “Members get first dibs on spectator tickets, so it’s basically like a community event because we all go,” Hills says. The club also has a tennis complex with clay and hard courts. Members can drive golf carts to the contemporary-style beach clubhouse on Myrtle Beach’s 60-mile-long shoreline. White and dark green umbrellas shade lounge chairs around the clubhouse’s swimming pool, while cornhole boards and giant Jenga blocks dot the lawn area.

Pine Lakes Country Club has another golf course
The community is near several other recreation spaces, including the Pine Lakes Country Club, home to the city’s first-ever golf course that opened in 1927. Robert White, the original president of the PGA, designed the rolling 18-hole layout. A pub is inside the massive Colonial Revival-style clubhouse, where magazine marketing executives met in 1954 to create the inaugural edition of Sports Illustrated. Speedboats and sailboats are tied to wooden docks at the Grande Dunes Marina, a public facility along the Intracoastal Waterway. Boat slips are available for short-term or long-term rental. Hibben Memorial Park has public beach access just east of the community, and the neighboring Apache Pier is a popular spot to catch sea bass, snapper and flounder.

Kings Highway is a tourist destination
Seafood restaurants, steakhouses and the Tanger Outlets line Kings Highway, also home to entertainment centers, like the Carolina Opry Theater. With these tourist-heavy spots, Hills says most locals don’t frequent the highway. “If we go out to eat, we try to avoid Kings Highway,” she says. “Driving on it can be horrible, especially during the summer.” Dartboards and foosball tables fill Harry The Hats, one of several dive bars about 3 miles east. Grocery stores in the area include Publix and Food Lion. Downtown Myrtle Beach, less than 7 miles west, has a boardwalk with amusement park rides, ice cream shops and more restaurants.

Wilmington and Charleston are within driving distance
Though some streets have sidewalks and locals often take golf carts to club amenities, Grande Dunes is a car-dependent community. Wilmington is a 70-mile drive north on Kings Highway, while Charleston is 103 miles south. State Highway 31, locally known as Carolina Bays Parkway, runs parallel to the Intracoastal Waterway and spans all of Myrtle Beach. Coast RTA buses offer rides to places across the city, including the Myrtle Beach International Airport, about 10 miles south. The Grand Strand Medical Center at the community’s core has over 400 beds and an emergency room.
