Rodanthe
Neighborhood in Nags Head, North Carolina
Dare County 27959
Beachfront living for a pretty penny
The most desirable properties in Rodanthe sit along the water, whether on the ocean or the Pamlico Sound. Less pricy homes lie closer to the village’s main thoroughfare. Single-family homes have all the typical beachy bells and whistles, including wraparound balconies and raised piling. Many sport vibrant shades of pastel siding, while others are covered in classic shingle paneling. From petite beach cottages to sprawling oceanfront mansions, these houses sell from $425,000 to $2 million. “Prices are a little lower here than in Nags Head. Up in Nags Head, the houses get so pricey that the rental income doesn’t always match it, so it’s a better investment value down here,” says Pete Conley, a Hatteras Island resident and Realtor with Realty One Group OBX. Rare to Hatteras Island, there are a handful of oceanfront condos priced between $425,000 and $600,000.Nature surrounds on all sides
The Cape Hatteras National Seashore borders Rodanthe to the east, with miles of undeveloped shoreline stretching down the coast. Avid anglers cast off from Rodanthe Pier, which extends out from the easternmost point in the state. On the Pamlico Sound side, kiteboarders and windsurfers cruise atop the waters’ calm surface. The Tri-villages, particularly the village of Waves just to the south, has long been an epicenter for water sports on the Sound. “Real Watersports is a pretty busy business that teaches kiteboarding classes,” Gillikin says. To the north, birders flock to the Pea Island Wildlife Refuge. This stretch of untamed beaches and marshes is preserved for the sake of the native bird species that call the island home and is also the site of the annual Wings Over Water wildlife festival. The village’s most notable event, its celebration of Old Christmas on January 6th, takes place at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Building. A holdover from colonial times before the Gregorian calendar was adopted in the mid-18th century, residents still get together 250 years later to celebrate with an oyster feast, music and dancing. Throughout the year, however, families flock to the community center to let their little ones run loose on the pirate-themed playground.Education options for permanent residents
Dare County Schools are located 25 miles south in Buxton, roughly a 35-minute drive. Cape Hatteras Elementary scores a B-minus from Niche, while Cape Hatteras Secondary School earns a B. The secondary school, which serves kids between sixth and 12th grades, is known for its coastal studies program, where students can get hands-on experience learning about the ecosystem of Hatteras Island.Soundside meals in town
Businesses sparsely populate this beach village, and some locally owned shops and restaurants only operate seasonally. However, there’s just enough in the village to get by without going far. Small convenience stores such as North Beach Groceries and Island Convenience provide everyday needs, and there’s a Food Lion in Avon in addition to other essential services such as a doctor’s office. “Lisa’s Pizzeria is the best pizza place I know of in the Tri-villages,” Gillikin says. “Kitty Hawk Kites has a restaurant called Good Winds. It’s right on the Sound, so you can watch all the kiteboarders and windsurfers.”A historic life-saving landmark
Rodanthe is home to the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station, the first Life-Saving Station to be built in coastal North Carolina and what would later lead to the founding of the U.S. Coast Guard. “My husband worked for the National Parks Service and was really into the island's history, so he’d participate in the demonstrations there. Sometimes they’ll bring out the cannon and fire that off at the end,” Gillikin says. A major point of pride for the village and a noteworthy attraction for visitors, the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station is perhaps best known for the Mirlo Rescue of 1918, a dramatic maritime rescue in which 42 British sailors were saved from their tanker after an attack by a German U-boat.Coastal erosion has put homes at risk
Flooding is a concern for residents of the Outer Banks, and Rodanthe is no exception. As recently as May 2024, some Rodanthe homes have fallen into the sea due to the continually eroding shoreline. “They put in a new bridge because the road was washing out in that area. And now that the road’s been moved, they’re letting people move their houses further back, but that’s very expensive for the homeowner,” Conley says. Even those who live further inland can expect to deal with occasional flooding from hurricanes and nor’easters, and most homes sit atop wooden piling to mitigate damage from high water levels.Errand runs take a half-hour drive
North Carolina Highway 12 serves as Rodanthe’s main thoroughfare, connecting it to the rest of the Outer Banks. Avon, the commercial center for Hatteras Island, is about 20 miles south. That's about a 25-minute drive. To the north, the most populous town on the barrier islands, Kill Devil Hills, is roughly 35 miles, or 50 minutes, away.
