Explore high peaks and restored prairie at the forest preserve
"From the highest peak in DuPage County, which is open to the public, to a partially restored prairie, to a heavily wooded trail, Greene Valley has it all," says local resident Doug Milford. "I love the variety and come back often." Greene Valley Forest Preserve is southeast of the neighborhood and is a massive park with trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing, plus picnic areas and camping facilities. The trails are made from crushed limestone and asphalt, so you won’t have to worry about mud if it rains. There is also an off-leash dog area on the east side of the park where you can let your furry friends run wild. Dogs will have to be on a leash in the other areas of the park. Greene Valley Forest Preserve is home to more than 540 native plant species, making it one of the county's most botanically diverse sites. On weekends May through October, its 190-foot-tall scenic overlook provides a bird's-eye view of the landscape and the Chicago skyline.
