Far west Nashville neighborhood appreciated for rural setting
Outer Charlotte extends from the southern banks of the Cumberland River and fills a pocket on the eastern end of Nashville’s Bellevue community. River Road is among the main routes here and cuts through rolling hills covered in pines. While modern subdivisions have been added on the edges, much of the area is rural and the terrain has put a check on development. And many appreciate the open spaces and views. “It’s an incredible setting, if you want a view or be down in a hollow where you have some privacy,” says Scott Troxel, a Realtor with Keller Williams Music City, who’s made several sales in Bellevue. Kent Patterson, a Realtor with Southern Life Real Estate and a Nashville native, echoes his peer’s comment. “You can get a house out there on an acre or two acres, or more,” Patterson says. “That’s what’s on River Road, which runs all the way up to Ashland City. And you’re close to the river, and there’s some activities along there, as well.” Residents here, however, aren’t isolated. Like much of Bellevue, they’re close to Interstate 40, which provides a direct connection to downtown Nashville. River Road also connects to Charlotte Pike, which goes past a few shopping centers with major chain brands.
Rural ranch-style houses and suburban contemporaries and Traditionals
Ranch-style dot the rural hills around River Road, sitting on spacious lots with dirt or gravel driveways. A few of these narrow paths even snake up heavily wooded hills. This scenery contrasts with the Cedar Crest subdivision to the south, where dense groups of 1990s and 2000s Traditional style houses line suburban streets. Brick exteriors are common, while a few of the houses exhibit saltbox touches. New developments of contemporary style houses and townhouses have also popped up along the southern and eastern edges of Outer Charlotte, which are also where recent sales have occurred. Price points for both the Traditionals and new contemporaries can run between $450,000 and $600,000, depending on size. With size again playing a role, many townhouses run between $380,000 and $550,000.
Cold brews at the Tailgate Brewery Headquarters
Those who live in the Cedar Crest area are close to the TailGate Brewery Headquarters, where patrons can enjoy craft brews under the tents and hanging lights of the beer garden. Farther up the road is a shopping center with chain stores like Walmart. Dining spots here include one of Tennessee’s six Jim ‘N Nick’s BBQ restaurants, a Birmingham, Alabama-based chain with locations across several Southern states. On their way to work, commuters can grab an order at the Land of A Thousand Hills Coffee. The cafe’s modern setting includes interior features like exposed wood beams. Patrons can also grab a seat on one of many couches or cushioned seats to enjoy their morning coffee.
Burn off some energy at H.G. Hill Park
Nearby green spaces include the H.G. Hill Park to the east on Charlotte Pike. The park features a playground for children, and some fun sights like artistic guitar fixtures. A walking path goes around an open field where parents and children can be seen kicking around a soccer ball. Warner Parks — the collective name for Edwin and Percy Warner Parks — is a short distance to the south. At more than 3,100 acres, the parks make up one of the largest city-run green spaces in the state. Visitors to the parks can enjoy miles of trail for activities ranging from jogging and hiking to horseback riding. Boaters interested in scenic trips on the Cumberland can apply for a membership at the Commodore Yacht Club, which runs a marina right off River Road.
Shows at the Ray Stevens CabaRay Showroom
Country Music Hall of Fame inductee and multi-Grammy Award winner Ray Stevens has a venue off River Road, the Ray Stevens CabaRay Showroom. Every Saturday night, his fans turn out to see him in an elegantly decorated showroom with features like red carpeted and tile flooring and crystal chandeliers. A red grand piano sits on the stage, while Stevens’ name in lighted lettering is emblazoned across a starry backdrop. Although Stevens announced that 2024 will be his last season, other artists will continue to play at the venue. Outer Charlotte residents also aren’t far from the annual Iroquois Steeplechase, which takes place in May at Percy Warner Park. The horse race is a more than 80-year-old tradition, and goers deck themselves out in formal wear for the occasion.
Enjoying new facilities of James Lawson High School
Younger children can attend Gower Elementary School, which received a B-minus from ratings site Niche. They can then go to H.G. Hill Middle School, which received a C-plus grade from Niche. The middle school’s media center has the distinction of functioning as a branch of the Nashville Public Library system. The pathway from the middle school leads to the new James Lawson High School, which doesn’t have a Niche rating yet. James Lawson replaced the old Hillwood High School, and students at the new campus enjoy a 300,000-square-foot facility with state-of-the-art classrooms.
Transportation
Interstate 40 runs right along the southern and eastern ends of Outer Charlotte and provides direct routes to downtown Nashville, the Nashville International Airport and other neighboring communities on the western side of the region. The Outer Charlotte area is respectively about 9 miles and 16 from downtown Nashville and the Nashville International Airport. For medical needs, there’s the Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West about 5 miles east of the community.
