Percy Priest Lake: “A little jewel in an urban area”

In Una, old pickup trucks back up down the Hamilton Creek Boat Launch, and fishing boats motor off in search of striped bass and the occasional catfish. Just 12 miles outside of downtown Nashville, Una is a blend of brand-new developments, rugged bike trails, churches and warehouses on the banks of Percy Priest Lake. “The lake itself is like a little jewel in an urban area,” says George Blue, Cruising Chair at the Percy Priest Yacht Club. Campgrounds, dockside restaurants and rocky beaches surround the water, which spans over 40,000 acres. Not too far away is the Nashville International Airport, and days beside the water are punctuated by the “very noticeable” sound of jet engines, according to local Realtor Flora Love, with the Realty Association. “We’re called the ‘It’ City,” she says of the Nashville area, speaking to the abundance of public parks, lakefront recreation and easy access to brand-new shopping centers like Tanger Outlets, found just about 7 miles away from Percy Priest boat launches. Like many Music City neighborhoods, Una is on the precipice of change.

Townhouse communities and open acreage

Those looking to establish roots in Una will find a mix of open land and subdivisions established after the year 2000 — new construction in the area is mainly townhouses, says Love. Townhouses are concentrated along Smith Springs Road and Nashboro Boulevard, and two-bedroom units can range from $230,000 to just over $300,000. Three bedrooms, meanwhile, often fall between $300,000 and $375,000. There’s also the occasional single-family home, two-story brick designs that feature two-car garages and Colonial-inspired molding over front entries. These start around $400,000 and reach up to $450,000. Culd-de-sacs are quiet enough for basketball hoops, and residents like to decorate their front yards with faux spiderwebs and spiders come Halloween.

Boats dock at the Hamilton Creek Recreation Area; races sponsored by the Percy Priest Yacht Club

On the banks of Percy Priest Lake is Hamilton Creek Marina, and locals can reserve dock space at the marina; there’s room for everything from paddleboards to sailboats. The park is also home to a BMX track and rugged mountain biking trails, and owners play fetch with their dogs on rocky beaches. Starting in April and continuing throughout September, the Percy Priest Yacht Club hosts Wednesday night races, and there’s a burger social on the first Wednesday of every month. The club also offers “Sailing 101” courses and members know to check the calendar for community potlucks and live music at the marina. “We do some volunteer work as well,” says Blue. “We have clean up at the lake once a year. A lot of local high schools come out.” Some members have belonged to the club for decades, says Blue, whereas others are brand-new; it’s representative of Nashville’s steady expansion. “We’ve been around for 50 years — there’s been a lot of growth over that time,” Blue notes.

Just across the water from Hamilton Creek Marina is the Anderson Road Fitness Trail and day use beach, where families head with packed lunch coolers on the weekends. Nearby, out-of-towners can be found with their tents and RVs in tow at the Anderson Road Campground. The Una Recreation Skate Park is farther inland, and youth football teams practice on the field next door. Just south of the neighborhood is Nashboro Golf Club, which is open to the public. Reserve tee times in advance online.

Career-related experience through the Academies of Nashville System

Students belong to the Metro Nashville Public Schools, where they can attend elementary schools like Lakeview or Una until fourth grade — both options earned C grades from the educational review site, Niche. Afterward, Margaret Allen Middle and Apollo Middle earned a C and a C-minus, respectively. Last stop on the public school pipeline is the C-rated Antioch High, where there are four academies to choose from after freshman year, part of the larger Academies of Nashville system. Students can gain career-related experience in fields like accounting, automotive maintenance or even tourism management. Private school options include Priest Lake Christian Academy for younger kids — until fourth grade — or Ezell-Harding Christian School, which has an A-minus grade.

Waterslides at Nashville Shores and live music beside the lake

Activities in this part of the Nashville Metropolitan Area are mainly concentrated around Percy Priest Lake. Drive 7 miles north to reach Nashville Shores Lakeside Resort. The waterpark has a lazy river, 10 slides and a “Treetop Adventure” course that advertises suspension bridges, ziplines and rope swings. Some choose to invest in season passes, and visitors can also rent pontoon boats or jet skis at Nashville Shores Marina. After a summer day at the waterpark, stop by Shipwreck Cove at Elm Hill Marina on the drive back to Una. They serve up “good bar food,” according to Blue: cheeseburgers and fish and chips in paper-lined baskets. They’re also known for their frozen Bushwackers, a cocktail made with rum and coffee liqueur and live music on the patio.

Tacos and groceries along Murfreesboro Pike

Shopping and dining in Una are mainly concentrated along Murfreesboro Pike, which leads north past the airport all the way downtown. The thoroughfare is lined with Mexican restaurants, fast-food stops like Burger King and national grocery chains, including Kroger and Aldi. Taqueria Y Birrieria Arandas is open for delivery and pickup, and popular menu items include pollo tacos and tripa gorditas. Or start the day off at Ethio Coffee House, which serves up authentic Ethiopian breakfast dishes like fitfit and sambusas. Down the street, find deals at Ollie’s Bargain Outlet or Dollar Tree, and Tanger Outlets also aren’t too far away, about 15 minutes from Una off Cane Ridge Parkway.

Commutes along Murfreesboro Pike into downtown Nashville

Although it’s only 12 miles into Downtown Nashville from Una, it can take between 20 and 40 minutes to commute along Murfreesboro Pike and Interstate 24. As the population continues to increase, so does traffic; Love says it can get particularly congested between 3 and 6 p.m. Most rely on their own cars to travel between neighborhoods, but there’s also WeGo Bus 55, which stops near Taqueria Y Birrieria Arandas on the way downtown. There are hundreds of daily flights from Nashville International Airport, which is less than 10 minutes from the neighborhood, and TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center is 6 miles away via Harding Place. It’s not uncommon for Middle Tennessee residents to work in the healthcare industry, but other major employers include Amazon, which has a warehouse next to the airport, and large-scale manufacturers like Nissan.
