Birdsnest has been a small agricultural community for generations
Birdsnest is a small community in the wooded interior of Virginia’s Eastern Shore. “It doesn’t have much of a downtown to speak of. It’s an old town,” says Eastern Shore native Shaun Sterling, a Realtor with Long & Foster Real Estate. “There’s a lot of different pieces of that legacy, from people who’ve lived there multigenerationally to people who are working in an assortment of industries.” Agriculture and seafood have long been the two main industries, and homes are scattered across small hamlets not far from the tip of the Delmarva Peninsula. The rural location near Lankford Highway may appeal to those looking for a quiet retreat between the Chesapeake Bay and waterways leading to the Atlantic Ocean.
19th-century and brand-new homes sit along Birdsnest's rural lanes
Birdsnest includes country homes built as early as the 1850s, plus dozens of ranch-style homes built throughout the 20th century and bungalows built as recently as the 2020s. Many Birdsnest families have lived in the community for generations, and homes rarely come on the market. The spread-out, rural character means each home features a degree of seclusion, with tall trees forming many backyard boundaries. The area also receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 1, the lowest possible score.
Birdsnest's farmland and creeks offer opportunities for outdoor recreation
Swathes of woodland and farmland cover most of the community. Just off Lankford Highway, the Nigerian Dwarf Farm — and its herd of around 100 Nigerian Dwarf goats — invites visitors to take part in guided nature walks, yoga sessions and other activities at the farm. Nearby Chatham Vineyards & Winery offers wine tastings at a farm established in 1915. In Birdsnest’s northeastern corner, Red Bank Road leads to a public boat ramp that lets kayakers venture into Red Bank Creek, Hog Island Bay and other Eastern Shore waterways.
Northampton High offers students better opportunities for engagement
Students can start their education at Occohannock Elementary School, which receives a C grade from Niche, before heading to Northampton Middle School and Northampton High School, which both receive a C-plus. In addition to a smaller-than-average student-teacher ratio, robust soccer and marching band programs present opportunities for growth outside the classroom.
Lankford Highway connects Birdnest to shopping amenities
Lankford Highway serves as Birdsnest’s retail lifeline, connecting this small community to local businesses. Baines Farm & Market is known for its fresh fish and produce, while Quail Cove Farms sells freshly made sweet potato donuts in addition to local spices and honey. Exmore’s Food Lion is a 10-minute drive. For big-box shopping, Birdsnest residents head an hour south to Virginia Beach, where they can explore the retail scene at the Lynnhaven Mall.
Larger towns and healthcare are less than 30 minutes away
Birdsnest is about 15 miles north of Cape Charles via Lankford Highway, which also provides access to Virginia Beach, 55 miles away. The nearest hospital, the Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital, is a 20-minute drive up the highway in Onley.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data.
