Machipongo combines rural quiet with waterborne adventures
Well-immersed within the Eastern Shore’s vast stretches of woods, waterways and farms, Machipongo surrounds its residents with opportunities for outdoor recreation. Machipongo’s original inhabitants gave it a name meaning “much dirt," referencing its juxtaposition of rolling fields with winding creeks and the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. This waterfront access still contributes to Machipongo’s homebuying appeal. “Machipongo has quite a few waterfront properties, in the sense that you’ve got the Vaucluse Shores community along the creeks there, and there are some other homes along the bay,” says Shaun Sterling, a Realtor with Long & Foster Real Estate. “You’ve got a pretty good amount of second homes and primary homes there.” Centuries after Machipongo received its name, people continue to find charm in its riverside style of living.

Though Machipongo has no public parks, its abundance of wild nature means that there is no shortage of venues for outdoor adventures. Many homes have piers and docks in their backyards, enabling residents to boat and fish off Vaucluse Point, Sparrow Point and other promontories. On land, Chatham Vineyards & Winery continues a century-long tradition of serving local chardonnays and merlots from an 1818-built brick house. Machipongo's homes vary in century of construction and creek access
Since its founding in the 1670s, Machipongo has developed in a scattered style, with some residences sitting along creeks and others dispersed throughout vast swathes of farmland. “While there’s no historic downtown, Machipongo has assorted buildings and the occasional church with some history to them,” Sterling says. Today, most of Machipongo’s homes trace their origins to the second half of the 20th century, although some properties were built as far back as the 1900s and others were built in the early 2020s. Inland homes can sell for between $70,000 and $345,000, while those on the water have sold for between $370,000 and $640,000. Most of Machipongo's houses were built in the ranch and bungalow styles, and many of them feature brick exteriors.
