Rural expanses in Fauquier County

New Baltimore is a rural enclave in eastern Fauquier County, sought out for its midcentury homes on wide, pastoral lots for buyers craving space and privacy. It’s also evenly distanced between the retail and events in Gainesville to the east and Warrenton to the southwest. The neighborhood began as an old Civil War-era crossroads community but was largely undeveloped until the mid-20th century.

Breakfast at Northside 29 or produce from Buckland Farm Market

Along Lee Highway is Northside 29, a neighborhood diner serving comfort foods, an all-day breakfast menu and craft cocktails since the mid-70s. Spitony’s Pizza offers hot pies and a variety of appetizers, subs and sandwiches; it can also make any pizza gluten-free for an extra $3 charge. Effee’s Frozen Favorites is the New Baltimore go-to for classic ice cream sundaes and milkshakes. Further north is Pearmund Cellars, a vineyard where locals can do wine tastings of their award-winning vinos on the outdoor terrace. The Pearmund Farmstore also offers local goods, from hot sauces and honey to wine-infused soaps. Residents can also shop for fresh, organic products at Buckland Farm Market, a family-owned business serving the area since 1986. Gainesville hosts Ross, Wegmans, Lowe’s and other big-box retailers just a few miles east for more retail options. Warrenton has a Giant and Safeway for groceries and department stores like Marshall’s.

Colonials and ranches sit on multi-acre lots

Home values range from $575,000 to $1.3 million, varying by age, square footage and lot size. Even lower-priced homes tend to come with spacious 1-acre lots. For a little over $600,000, there are four-bedroom colonials that were built in the 1990s, while quite a few more ranch-style homes go for about $700,000, including brick houses on 10-acre lots. “Most properties are on private wells and septic [systems] as opposed to public water and sewer,” says Matt Megel, a Realtor and founding partner of the CAZA Gainesville team. Locals commute to and from home along winding country roads, passing picket fences and the blooming landscaped lawns of neighbors.

Locals can fish or boat on Lake Brittle

Vint Hills Farm Park is within New Baltimore to the southeast and features a picnic area and a scenic spot for fishing. Many locals venture out onto Lake Brittle, a manmade, public lake popular for kayaking and electric motorboating, while anglers can catch largemouth bass, bluegill and channel catfish. Folks who want to work on their golf game can spend some time at Golf Spot 29, a driving range that has been in the area since 2017 and offers lessons for folks to improve their power drive or short game.

Lee Highway leads to Warrenton, Gainesville or D.C.

Though neighboring towns have seen commercial growth, New Baltimore has preserved an expansive rural character, so residents will need a car to access groceries and dining options in Warrenton or Gainesville. Tyler Ross, broker and listing specialist with Ross Real Estate, notes that the area is popular for people commuting to Washington and northern Virginia employers. “It’s about a 50-minute drive to the [nation’s] capital, and it’s also accessible to major airports,” he says. Warrenton is a 6-mile drive south along Lee Highway, while Gainesville is closer to 7 miles east along the same road.
