A neighborhood transformed by a park
When the City of New Bedford opened Riverside Park in 2005, it raised more than a few questioning eyebrows. The surrounding area was one of the city’s lowest-income areas, and there were suggestions that the city should have focused on other priorities. But, as journalist Jack Spillane wrote in The New Bedford Light, the park “has changed a New Bedford neighborhood more than any other action of city government in the last half-century.” Spillane also described the park as "an unqualified success.” Today, the Riverside Park neighborhood, which sits just a few miles north of downtown New Bedford, is an up-and-coming area that features one of the city’s most popular parks as its centerpiece.

The great outdoors in Riverside Park
The neighborhood’s namesake park is one of the marquee recreational destinations in all of New Bedford. Hugging the banks of the Acushnet River, Riverside Park offers exceptional views that can serve as a serene backdrop to a family outing or just a little personal relaxation. Riverside Park also features a turf soccer field and a basketball court, as well as a playground and a skate park. And thanks to the efforts of Groundwork SouthCoast, an area nonprofit that focuses on environmental concerns, Riverside Park also has 170 community garden plots, offered to area residents free of charge.
On the west side of the neighborhood, the Allen C. Haskell Public Gardens comprise 6 acres of botanical beauty. Multiple gardens and one of New Bedford’s oldest homes make up this natural respite in the bustling heart of the city. Rare trees and flowers, both exotic and native to the area, abound on the grounds of Haskell’s former home, built in 1725. Haskell’s own horticultural design skills were admired by such luminaries as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Martha Stewart. Admission to the park is free, and visitors are welcome from sunrise to sunset.

Getting around Riverside Park
One of the appeals of Riverside Park is the neighborhood’s proximity to Interstate 195, which serves as the southern boundary. That means that residents here can be on their way to Cape Cod – about 50 miles to the east – with relative ease. Alternatively, downtown New Bedford and all the shopping and entertainment available there is a short 2-mile trip south on Highway 18. “You have interstate access in this part of New Bedford, and what people are hoping is that a commuter rail will serve the area soon,” says Ellie Wickes, a Realtor with Sotheby's International Realty in Westport. Construction began on the MBTA light rail system in 2020, though no current timeline is available as to when service will begin. Once the trains do begin running, however, passengers will be able to get from New Bedford to Boston in 90 minutes.

Dynamic shopping and dining nearby
The neighborhood Market Basket means that residents here don’t have to travel far to pick up their groceries. For home necessities and other shopping, Walmart is located a little over 3 miles east in Fairhaven. Of course, the dynamic shopping and other entertainment venues in downtown New Bedford are easy enough to get to, but there are also several noteworthy restaurants in the neighborhood. The food at Antonio’s is influenced by the large Portuguese population in the area: The menu includes a variety of family recipes, many of which take advantage of the fresh seafood available in the area. On Sunday mornings, many residents here worship at St. Anthony of Padua Church, which serves the area’s large Catholic population.
