A quiet neighborhood close to urban centers

“New Bedford has a storied history as the whaling capital of the world and one of the best historic districts in Massachusetts,” says Realtor Jason Lanagan. “We have some really beautiful neighborhoods scattered throughout the city.” One of those neighborhoods is Rockdale, a small residential area that sits immediately south of Interstate 195 and west of Highway 140. Situated between Westport and downtown New Bedford, Rockdale is best thought of as a peaceful suburban neighborhood sandwiched between two major urban centers. That proximity means that residents here don’t have to go far for all the amenities they might want, but at the same time, they can also retreat to a quiet suburban enclave. And with the easy access to I-195 that the neighborhood affords, a drive to Providence, Boston or Cape Cod is that much easier.

Out and about in Rockdale

Because Rockdale is just 3 miles from the historic New Bedford waterfront, it's easy to take in all of the history that the city has to offer. Whether it’s browsing the artifacts at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, strolling the docks along the waterfront or walking the cobblestone streets of downtown – or even hopping a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket – there are plenty of things to see and do in this seaport destination. Residents looking for more terrestrial-based enjoyment can visit the nearby Allen C. Haskell Public Gardens, a 6-acre park featuring an array of botanical gardens, walking paths and one of the oldest homes in the city. Just south of the neighborhood is Buttonwood Park, home to a playground, a basketball court, tennis courts, walking paths and the Buttonwood Park Zoo. Golfers will feel right at home in Rockdale, as there are two courses close by. The Whaling City Golf Course is an 18-hole public layout that offers four different sets of tee-box markers, allowing for golfers of all ability levels to find both challenge and enjoyment. The Country Club of New Bedford is a private 18-hole facility with a beautiful landscaping focused on ponds, creeks and woodlands.

Nearby shopping and dining

Because of the neighborhood’s relatively small size and residential nature, locals here do have to venture outside of the area for shopping. Shaw’s is located just south of the neighborhood for groceries, and Walmart Supercenter is a few miles west on Route 6 for home necessities and other shopping. The Dartmouth Mall is 2 miles west, where shoppers will find a variety of retailers, dining options and an AMC movie theater.

When they choose to dine out, residents here head straight to Riccardi’s for traditional Italian favorites served in a comfortable setting. The Village Café is another popular option, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner from a menu that features a little bit of just about everything.
